Coronada y el toro (Coronada and the Bull) is a play written in 1974 by Francisco Morales Nieva (1924–2016), a prominent figure in the history of Spanish theatre. Even though the aesthetic quality of his drama competed with that of his contemporaries, with many of whom he interacted (Ionesco, Genet, Brecht, Grotowski, et al.), Nieva’s recognition was unduly delayed within Spain and, on the international scene, his name remains eclipsed by playwrights such as Federico García Lorca and Antonio Buero Vallejo. Traditionalist and populist yet cosmopolitan and neo-avant-garde, Nieva began writing plays in the late 1940s but never got the chance to perform any on the commercial stage until 1976, a few months after the death of General Francisco Franco, whose censorship machine forced his work underground. Hard to subject to any single classification, Nieva’s theatre is as complex as it is innovative in its combination of resources from a wide range of artistic trends, from the género chico to the Baroque to postmodernism. Coronada y el toro is a sophisticated masterpiece, rich in intertextuality, humour, and suspense.

Virginia Aspe’s erudite Approaches to the Theory of Freedom offers a new interpretation of “Primero Sueño”–probably the highest Spanish-written poem–, written by the nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz . Aspe considers the philosophical and theological influences regarding Sor Juana’s development of her concept and ideal of freedom. With vast erudition, Aspe helps advance the field of Sor Juana studies beyond what Paz was able to accomplish. She emphasises the influence of the Jesuit theology of the University of Coimbra. New perspectives and references available to the Spanish speaking world, such as the recent translation of several previously unknown Latin texts from Sor Juana’s Mexican contemporaries, provide insights that help Aspe take our understanding of the poem further and cast new lights on her idea of freedom, as well as her background and references. Approaches to the Theory of Freedom help us to become familiar with the way this magnificent poem becomes a defense of freedom. That is why this book means a significant contribution to our understanding of Sor Juana’s thought and the poetry of Sor Juana’s period.

Revisiting Centres And Peripheries In Iberian Studies written by Mark Gant and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-05 with Social Science categories.

Like its predecessor and companion volume New Journeys in Iberian Studies, this volume gathers fresh and emerging research in a range of sub-fields of Iberian studies from an international range of established academics and early career researchers. The book provides rich evidence of the breadth and depth of new research being carried out in the dynamic field of Iberian studies at present. As the title suggests, a strong thread running through the collection is concerned with investigating the multiple spaces of tension between the centre and periphery that comprise the Iberian cultural system. Topically, the current situation in Catalonia naturally comes to the fore in a number of chapters and from a range of perspectives. However, in the revisiting of a range of cultural products and historical processes undertaken by the contributors, it can be seen that transoceanic postcolonial relations are not neglected and concerns with history, memory and fiction also weave their way through their work.

Immanent Vitalities written by Kaira M. Cabañas and has been published by University of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-16 with Art categories.

A new reality for the art object has emerged in the world of contemporary art: it is now experienced less as an autonomous, inanimate form and more as an active material agent. In this book, Kaira M. Cabañas describes how such a shift in conceptions of art’s materiality came to occur, exploring key artistic practices in Venezuela, Brazil, and Western Europe from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Immanent Vitalities expands the discourse of new materialisms by charting how artists, ranging from Gego to Laura Lima, distance themselves from dualisms such as mind-matter, culture-nature, human-nonhuman, and even Western–non-Western in order to impact our understanding of what is animate. Tracing migrations of people, objects, and ideas between South America and Europe, Cabañas historicizes changing perceptions about art’s agency while prompting readers to remain attentive to the ethical dimensions of materiality and of social difference and lived experience.
