‘Oefenschool der Muzen, werkplaats der wetenschap’ zijn vermaarde woorden uit het Stichtingsbesluit van de Groninger Academie in 1614. De eerste Rector, Ubbo Emmius, gaf dit belangrijkste officiële document van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen de eretitel van ‘Edictum perpetuum’ – ‘Eeuwig (geldend) edict’. Geen enkele andere oude universiteit kan bogen op een stichtingsoorkonde die qua inhoud en vorm zo goed de tand des tijds heeft doorstaan. Behalve over het Eeuwig Edict zelf en de daarin figurerende koning Alfonso de Grootmoedige (1396-1458), bevorderaar van onderwijs en wetenschap, handelen de bijdragen in deze bundel over onderwerpen die nauw verbonden zijn met het ontstaan van de Academie en haar vroegste ontwikkeling, zoals de ‘Aduarder Akademie’, de oprichting van de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid in 1596, de ‘Artes’ in de eerste jaren van de Groninger Universiteit, en tot slot het ontstaan van de eerste botanische tuin onder Abraham Munting.

This collection of essays treats a topic that has scarcely been approached in the literature on Hebrew and Hebraism in the early modern period. In the seventeenth century, Christians, especially Protestants, studied the Mishnah alongside a host of Jewish commentaries in order to reconstructJewish culture, history, and ritual, shedding new light on the world of the Old and New Testaments. Their work was also inextricably dependent upon the vigorous Mishnaic studies of early modern Jewish communities. Both traditions, in a sense, culminated in the monumental production in six volumes ofan edition and Latin translation of the Mishnah published by Guilielmus Surenhusius in Amsterdam between 1698 and 1703. Surenhusius gathered up more than a century's worth of Mishnaic studies by scholars from England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, as well as the commentaries of Maimonidesand Obadiah of Bertinoro (c. 1455-c.1515), but this edition was also born out of the unique milieu of Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth century, a place which offered possibilities for cross-cultural interactions between Jews and Christians. With Surenhusius's great volumes as an end point,the essays presented here discuss for the first time the multiple ways in which the canonical text of Jewish law, the Mishnah (c.200 CE), was studied by a variety of scholars, both Jewish and Christian, in early modern Europe. They tell the story of how the Mishnah generated an encounter betweendifferent cultures, faiths, and confessions that would prove to be enduringly influential for centuries to come.

Toen de Franse regeringscommissaris Georges Cuvier in 1811 de Groningse universiteit bezocht, verbaasde hij zich erover dat deze universiteit in een uithoek van het keizerrijk al bijna twee eeuwen een baken van beschaving en verlichting was. Painting and Publishing as Cultural Industries, 1580-1800 addresses how a small country like the Dutch Republic could become a major player in the creation of cultural goods during the Golden Age. On the basis of quantitative and qualitative sources from art history and book history, Claartje Rasterhoff traces the evolution of the painting and publishing industries from modest trades to booming industries. Informed by studies on cultural industries, she focuses on the role of industrial organization in shaping patterns of growth and innovation. Much like their present-day counterparts, early modern Dutch cultural industries were spatially concentrated, highly networked, and institutionally embedded. This distinct organizational structure helped to reduce uncertainty in the market and stimulated the commercial and creative potential of painters and publishers, for a century at least. Dutch painters and publishers had catered to their markets so rapidly and in such variety, that the exceptional levels of output, quality, and innovation accomplished during the first half of the seventeenth century could not be sustained. As producers came to face saturated domestic markets, they took to limiting risks and strenghtening their distribution and marketing activities. By introducing the concepts of business cycles and spatial clusters, Rasterhoff offers a novel explanation
