Mikropemproses ialah unit pemprosesan pusat yang terdapat di dalam komputer dan telefon pintar yang kita gunakan sepanjang masa. Peranti asas yang membina mikropemproses itu ialah transistor. Transistor pula dibina daripada bahan semikonduktor tulen. Bahan semikonduktor tulen yang biasa ialah silikon. Inilah secara ringkas asal-usul komputer dan telefon pintar kita. Saiz mikropemproses semakin kecil sehingga kini ia boleh dimuatkan di dalam telefon pintar kita. Lajunya semakin pantas sehingga kita boleh membuat panggilan video ke serata dunia. Bolehkah mikropemproses dikecilkan lagi sehingga boleh suntik ke dalam badan kita? Bolehkah kelajuan mikropemproses dipantaskan lagi kepada laju cahaya? Teks syarahan ini mencatatkan pengalaman penulis selama 30 tahun dalam pembelajaran dan pengajaran, serta penyelidikannya terhadap sistem mikropemproses dan fotonikpemproses. Ia juga menyentuh jangkaan masa depan mikropemproses atau nanopemproses yang digunakan pada hari ini. Sistem mikropemproses berkembang daripada sistem 4-bit, kepada sistem 8-bit seterusnya kepada sistem 16-bit. Sistemnya terus mengecil daripada dimensi saiznya kepada nanopemproses, tetapi keupayaan dan kelajuannya terus meningkat kepada sistem 32-bit dan 64-bit pada hari ini. Berdasarkan Hukum Moore, diramalkan sistem nanopemproses akan sampai ke penghujungnya pada tahun 2020 apabila saiz transistor menjadi 1 nm. Penggantinya, sekiranya kelajuan menjadi faktor penentu, maka laju cahaya menjadi sasaran dengan sistem fotonikpemproses; sekiranya saiz dan kuantiti maklumat yang menjadi penentu, maka sistem kuantumpemproses akan meneraju masa depan. Negara dan syarikat-syarikat yang besar telah melabur banyak ke arah kuantumpemproses. Penulis, dengan berasaskan Hukum Moore, meramalkan sistem penggantinya iaitu kuantumpemproses, akan berada di pasaran menjelang tahun 2033.

Visual informatics is a field of interest not just among the information technology and computer science community, but also other related fields such as engineering, me- cal and health informatics and education starting in the early 1990s. Recently, the field is gaining more attention from researchers and industry.
