Démarré en IUFM à la suite du Plan de Rénovation des Langues Vivantes en 2002, l'objet de cette recherche est de démontrer qu'il est possible de susciter une prise de conscience phonologique (PcPh) en anglais L2 auprès des jeunes apprenants de 8-11 ans (JA 8-11) au Cycle 3, par le biais d'interactions avec le médium musical et une réflexion explicite sur la dimension prosodique, mélodique et cognitive de la langue (Temps de Phonologie Raisonnée). Le fil rouge nous a été donné par Chomsky lui-même lorsqu'il parle de ''Nature - Utilization - Productive Way'' (Chomsky 1977 : 43), au sujet de la phonologie de l'anglais, bien que nous considérions dans cette recherche une approche théorique non-monolithique, cumulative et dialectique, entre les différents courants structuralistes, générativistes, naturalistes, optimalistes et behavioristes, entre autres. L'approche holistique implementée est donc à la fois interdisciplinaire, en faisant intervenir l'épistémologie, la psycholinguistique et la didactique des langues, autant que trans-théorique, en ouvrant une large perspective sur les différentes écoles philosophiques et mathématiques, fussent-elles rationnalistes, empiristes ou constructivistes piagétiennes, qui sous-tendent les appréciations sur la langue, pour tenter finalement de réconcilier théorie et praxis, dans l'économie du savoir faire linguistique des futurs citoyens européens.

This volume introduces the field of child language development studies, and presents hypotheses in an accessible, largely non-technical language, aiming to demonstrate the relationship between these hypotheses and interpretations of data. It makes the assumption that having a theory of language development is as important as having reliable data about what children say and understand, and it advocates a combination of both `rationalist' and more 'empiricist' traditions. In fact, the author overtly argues that different traditions provide different pieces of the picture, and that taking any single approach is unlikely to lead to productive understanding. Susan Foster-Cohen explores a range of issues, including the nature of prelinguistic communication and its possible relationship to linguistic development; early stages of language development and how they can be viewed in the light of later developments; the nature and role of children's experience with the language(s) around them; variations in language development due to both pathological and non-pathological differences between children, and (in the latter case) between the languages they learn; later oral language development; and literacy. The approach is distinctly psycholinguistic and linguistic rather than sociolinguistic, although there is significant treatment of issues which intersect with more sociolinguistic concerns (e.g. literacy, language play, and bilingualism). There are exercises and discussion questions throughout, designed to reinforce the ideas being presented, as well as to offer the student the opportunity to think beyond the text to ideas at the cutting edge of research. The accessible presentation of key issues will appeal to the intended undergraduate readership, and will be of interest to those taking courses in language development, linguistics, developmental psychology, educational linguistics, and speech pathology. The book begins with a review of research into dictionary use. A number of experimental design problems are discussed, in particular the unreliability of questionnaire responses, and the need for detailed accounts of individual dictionary consultations whilst sampling in numbers sufficient to represent specified populations. The experiments reported in subsequent chapters investigate issues raised in the review. The first two studies find that dictionary use during a reading comprehension test affected completion speed but not test scores. The apparent failure of dictionary use to improve comprehension is attributed to the test itself, the dictionaries, and the users' choice of look-up words. The ability of users to interpret dictionary entries is investigated in three further studies which use computers to gather data on large numbers of individual consultations. The findings indicate that there is little difference between three major EFL dictionaries in terms of speed of consultation and overall productive success. They also indicate that Malaysian ESL subjects, who have higher vocabulary scores, are slower in their reading and less successfull in their interpretation of entries than Portuguese EFL subjects. Finally, the findings suggest that overall productive success is unaffected by the presence or absence of examples. The experimental findings lead to the conclusion that dictionary consultation is a process in which users match pre-existing beliefs about word meaning and behaviour against segments in the dictionary entry. Such segments are often selected because they are familiar-sounding and conceptually accessible, but may contain only incomplete or non-essential information. Where pre-existing beliefs and dictionary information conflict, dictionary information is sometimes overridden. Thus word knowledge acquired from a single consultation is often insufficient to ensure productive success. Although it is probably inevitable that word knowledge will be acquired slowly, through multiple encounters, modifications to the dictionary entry and the training of users might help to avoid serious misinterpretation of dictionary information.
