REHMLAC, Revista de Estudios Históricos de la Masonería Latinoamericana y Caribeña es una publicación electrónica académica multidisciplinaria semestral, que nace para la difusión scientífi ca de la masonería latinoamericana y caribeña. REHMLAC es parte del "Programa de Estudios Históricos de la Masonería y Sociedades Patrióticas en Centroamérica" de la Escuela de Estudios Generales de la Universidad de Costa Rica dirigido por el profesor Miguel Guzmán-Stein. Programa, que a su vez, forma parte de una red académica, que incluye : el Centro de Estudios Históricos de la Masonería Española de la Universidad de Zaragoza (España), la Casa de Altos Estudios Don Fernando Ortiz de la Universidad de La Habana (Cuba), el Departamento de Filosofía de la Universidad Centroamericana "José Simeón Cañas" (El Salvador), y The Center for Research into Freemasonry and Fraternalism de la University of Sheffi eld (Inglaterra). En Isis modernista se abordan la expansión y el impacto en el mundo de habla español ade las dos corrientes esotéricas más importantes en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del XX: el espiritismo y la teosofía, a partir sobre todo del mundo literario, aunque sus efectos se vieron también en otros ámbitos, como el social, el religioso, el artístico, el educativo y el político. Para ello se hace una presentación de qué y cómo ha de entenderse el fenómeno esotérico en lengua castellana, aprovechando para esto la reflexión académica esoterológica de los últimos treinta años, y dándole un contexto histórico y cultural de modernidad y secularización que permita entenderlo mejor, más allá de los prejuicios positivistas, marxistas o cristianos de la cultura oficial, o de las adhesiones acríticas de sus adeptos. Se revisan en especial los casos de cuatro países representativos de dicha geografía panhispánica (España, México, Costa Rica y Argentina -origen, norte, centro y sur-), si bien algunos rasgos encontrados son extrapolables a otros países de la región. Además, se reúnen algunos textos sobre tópicos esotéricos de escritores de la época, como Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Juan Varela, Amado Nervo, José Juan Tablada, Leopoldo Lugones y Roberto Arlt, entre muchos más. Se pretende de esta manera que el lector cobre conciencia de la importancia cultural del fenómeno esotérico en nuestra lengua.

Long recognized as more than the writings of a dozen or so philosophes, the Enlightenment created a new secular culture populated by the literate and the affluent. Enamoured of British institutions, Continental Europeans turned to the imported masonic lodges and found in them a new forum that was constitutionally constructed and logically egalitarian. Originating in the Middle Ages, when stone-masons joined together to preserve their professional secrets and to protect their wages, the English and Scottish lodges had by the eighteenth century discarded their guild origins and become an international phenomenon that gave men and eventually some women a place to vote, speak, discuss and debate. Margaret Jacob argues that the hundreds of masonic lodges founded in eighteenth-century Europe were among the most important enclaves in which modern civil society was formed. In France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Britain men and women freemasons sought to create a moral and social order based upon reason and virtue, and dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality. A forum where philosophers met with men of commerce, government, and the professions, the masonic lodge created new forms of self-government in microcosm, complete with constitutions and laws, elections, and representatives.
