English summary: Medical ethos in the sphere of influence of various non-medical interests is the focus of this anthology - an issue that is often neglected in the study of medicine and the history of medicine. The historical analyses of case studies from the fields of obstetrics and terminal care, notions of honour, and medical duty aim to foster an awareness that even today must be maintained throughout medical training. Unlike Nazi medical experiments, euthanasia during the Third Reich is barely studied or taught. Often, even asking whether euthanasia during the Third Reich is relevant to contemporary debates about physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and euthanasia is dismissed as inflammatory. Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia: Before, During, and After the Holocaust explores the history of euthanasia before and during the Third Reich in depth and demonstrate how Nazi physicians incorporated mainstream Western philosophy, eugenics, population medicine, prevention, and other medical ideas into their ideology. This book reveals that euthanasia was neither forced upon physicians nor wantonly practiced by a few fanatics, but widely embraced by Western medicine before being sanctioned by the Nazis. Contributors then reflect on the significance of this history for contemporary debates about PAS and euthanasia. While they take different views regarding these practices, almost all agree that there are continuities between the beliefs that the Nazis used to justify euthanasia and the ideology that undergirds present-day PAS and euthanasia. This conclusion leads our scholars to argue that the history of Nazi medicine should make society wary about legalizing PAS or euthanasia and urge caution where it has been legalized.

Die Vereinbarkeit von Suizidbeihilfe und ärztlichem Ethos stellt eine der dringlichsten Fragen der modernen Medizin dar. Die vorliegende Studie greift die aktuelle Diskussion dieser Frage mit Blick auf die schweizerische Situation auf. Aus der Einsicht, dass der gefühlte Verlust von persönlicher Autonomie den Suizidwunsch hervorruft, wirft die Studie die bioethische Folgefrage auf, ob alle Menschen Personen sind. Unter Bezug auf das Denken von Paul Ricœur erklärt die Studie, weshalb jeder Mensch, unabhängig von seinen realen Fähigkeiten, als autonome Person zu betrachten und als solche mit der Herausforderung konfrontiert ist, die eigene Einsamkeit zu überwinden. Die Suizidbeihilfe erweist sich jedoch gerade hier als problematisch, da sie die wechselseitige Anerkennung zerstört und die Einsamkeit des Einzelnen bestätigt. Die richtige, dem ärztlichen Ethos entsprechende Antwort auf die menschliche Not, die dem Suizidwunsch zugrunde liegt, ist hingegen die Palliative Care. Denn sie ermöglicht ein Sterben, das Selbstschätzung und Selbstachtung fördert und damit die Anerkennung des Menschen als autonome Person verwirklicht. Jeder Mensch sollte diese Anerkennung in seinem gesamten Leben erfahren. Sie zu realisieren, stellt eine gesellschaftliche Herausforderung dar, zu deren Bewältigung gerade auch der christliche Glaube beitragen kann, bildet er doch eine Ressource, Menschen zusammenzuführen und Anonymität zu überwinden.

Was kennzeichnet eine gelingende Geburt und welche Zugänge sind geeignet, um diese Frage zu beantworten? Schien es in der klassischen Moderne lange Zeit so, als könne die medizinische Geburtshilfe hier als Leitdisziplin fungieren, so sind in der reflexiv gewordenen Moderne von verschiedenen Fachrichtungen Zweifel an einem solchen Selbstverständnis angemeldet worden. Kritisiert wird dabei etwa die Ausblendung des spezifischen, uneinholbar subjektiven Erlebenskontextes der Schwangeren, problematisiert wird ein Zugriff, der über präskriptiv-normative Zugangsweisen Kriterien für eine gelingende Geburt vorgeben möchte. Kontroversen ergeben sich zudem aus der Professionenkonkurrenz zwischen Hebammen, Ärztinnen und Ärzten. Umstritten ist weiterhin die Bedeutung der Geburt als Statusübergang, eine Frage, die durch die erweiterten Möglichkeiten pränataler Diagnostik ihre Dringlichkeit gewinnt: Begründet erst die Geburt ein eigenständiges Lebensrecht? Schließlich steht zur Debatte, welche Anhaltspunkte sich für eine Ethik der Elternschaft aus dem spezifischen Geschehen von Schwangerschaft und Geburt ableiten lassen. Die 68er-Studentenbewegung ist bislang fast immer in ihrer Gesamtheit betrachtet worden, im Vordergrund standen die Philosophischen Fakultäten. Wie aber verlief die Rebellion an der Medizinischen Fakultät? Welche Folgen hatte das Aufbegehren einer neuen Ärztegeneration für die Medizin? Diese Fragen untersucht der Historiker Ralf Forsbach, unter anderem mit Blick auf ein gewandeltes Arzt-Patienten-Verhältnis, einen veränderten Umgang mit Sexualität sowie auf den Konsum harter Drogen. Das Gehabe eines »Halbgottes in Wei߫ lehnten die jungen Medizinkritiker ab; die Psychiatrie suchten sie zu reformieren. Die konkreten Bemühungen um Veränderung gingen einher mit einer neuartigen Kritik an der Medizin in der NS-Zeit und deren Protagonisten, die teilweise noch immer in Amt und Würden waren. Auch die Auswüchse der Reformbewegung werden in den Blick genommen, so das »Sozialistische Patientenkollektiv« mit seinen Verbindungen zur späteren RAF. – Die Studie führt bis in die Gegenwart. Analysiert werden die Folgen grundlegender Veränderungen wie der Stärkung vorbeugender Medizin oder der zunehmenden Medienpräsenz medizinischer Themen. The 1968 student movement has hitherto almost always been considered as a whole, with the philosophical faculties at the fore. But how did the revolt take place in the medical faculty? What were the consequences of the protest of a new generation of medical practitioners for medicine? The historian Ralf Forsbach examines these questions among other things with a view to changes in the physician-patient relationship, a new approach to sexuality and the body and the consumption of hard drugs. The young medical critics rejected the affected behaviour of "demi-gods in white coats"; they sought to reform psychiatry. Their specific endeavours to make changes were accompanied by a new criticism of medicine during the Nazi regime and its protagonists, some of whom were still practising or in office. The author also takes a look at the excesses of the reform movement, such as the "Socialist Patients' Collective" and its associations with what later became the Red Army Faction. – The study leads us to the present day, analysing the consequences of fundamental changes such as the promotion of preventive medicine or the increasing media coverage of medical issues.

Susanne Fleckinger beleuchtet das Verhältnis zwischen haupt- und ehrenamtlich Tätigen in Hospizarbeit und Palliative Care. Hierzu befragt sie die beteiligten Akteure und geht der Frage nach, welche Bedeutung dem Ehrenamt in den unterschiedlichen Versorgungsbereichen zukommt. Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, dass sich Haupt- und Ehrenamt zwar durchaus ergänzen, zugleich aber grundsätzlich unterschiedlichen Handlungslogiken folgen. Eine gelingende Zusammenarbeit scheint vor allem dann möglich, wenn diese zum Gegenstand der kontinuierlichen Aushandlung der Sorgepraxis in der konkreten Einrichtung gemacht wird. Dafür allerdings ist es notwendig, dass der Zusammenarbeit von Ehrenamt und Hauptamt mehr Raum im Rahmen der Aus- und Weiterbildung eingeräumt wird
