In 1959 my mother became ill from TB and we were left in the care of my father and grandmother. The ISPCC deemed my father an unfit parent to look after us and as a result, my sisters and I were sentenced to 14 years in Pembroke Alms Industrial School where we were placed in the care of the Sisters of Mercy. While there, my sisters and I were subjected to horrendous, almost unimaginable cruelty and abuse, both physically and mentally, the scars of which I still feel today

Made Up written by Daphné B. and has been published by Coach House Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-19 with Social Science categories.

A nuanced, feminist, and deeply personal take on beauty culture and YouTube consumerism, in the tradition of Maggie Nelson’s Bluets As Daphné B. obsessively watches YouTube makeup tutorials and haunts Sephora’s website, she’s increasingly troubled by the ways in which this obsession contradicts her anti-capitalist and intersectional feminist politics. In this poetic treatise, she rejects the false binaries of traditional beauty standards and delves into the celebrities and influencers, from Kylie to Grimes, and the poets and philosophers, from Anne Boyer to Audre Lorde, who have shaped the reflection she sees in the mirror. At once confessional and essayistic, Made-Up is a meditation on the makeup that colours, that obscures, that highlights who we are and who we wish we could be. The original French-language edition was a cult hit in Quebec. Translated by Alex Manley—like Daphné, a Montreal poet and essayist—the book’s English-language text crackles with life, retaining the flair and verve of the original, and ensuring that a book on beauty is no less beautiful than its subject matter. “The most radical book of 2020 talks about makeup. Radical in the intransigence with which Daphne B hunts down the parts of her imagination that capitalism has phagocytized. Radical also in its rejection of false binaries (the authentic and the fake, the futile and the essential) through the lens of which such a subject is generally considered. With the help of a heady combination of pop cultural criticism and autobiography, a poet scrutinizes her contradictions. They are also ours.” —Dominic Tardif, Le Devoir “[Made-Up] is a delight. I read it in one go. And when, out of necessity, I had to put it down, it was with regret and with the feeling that I was giving up what could save me from a catastrophe.” —Laurence Fournier, Lettres Québécoises, five stars "Made-Up is a radiant, shimmering blend of memoir and cultural criticism that uses beauty culture as an entry point to interrogating the ugly contradictions of late capitalism. In short, urgent chapters laced with humor and wide-ranging references, Daphné B. plumbs the depths of a rich topic that’s typically dismissed as shallow. I imagine her writing it in eye pencil, using makeup to tell the story of her life, as so many women do." —Amy Berkowitz, author of Tender Points "A companion through the thicket of late stage capitalism, a lucid and poetic mirror for anyone whose image exists on a screen." —Rachel Kauder Nalebuff "Made-Up is anything but—committed to the grit of our current realities, Daphné B directs her piercing eye on capitalism in an intimate portrayal of what it means to love, and how to paint ourselves in the process. Alex Manley has gifted English audiences with a nuanced translation of a critical feminist text, exploring love and make-up as a transformative social tool." —Sruti Islam "The book will leave you both laughing in recognition and wincing at the reality of the beauty world’s impact on our collective psyche." —Chatelaine "[Made-Up] examines the intersection of beauty culture and consumer culture... Aided by the work of writers like Anne Carson, Anne Boyer, Amanda Hess, and Arabelle Sicardi... B. makes sharp observations about the ideologies behind both beauty [...] and consumerism." —Bitch Media "Made‑Up: A True Story of Beauty Culture under Late Capitalism is well worth reading." —Literary Review of Canada "[Made-Up], newly translated by writer/poet Alex Manley from its original French, puts an intersectional, feminist lens on the author’s personal fascination with the makeup industry; it also reckons with the cultural dominance of this fascination as she aims to square anti-capitalist principles with beauty-product obsession." —BitchReads: 11 Books Feminists Should Read in September

Her friend didn't say why, but Amra knew the reason: Amra was Muslim. It was the first sign her world was changing. Then Muslim refugees from other Bosnian cities started arriving, fleeing Serbian persecution. When the tanks rolled into Bihac, bringing her own city under seige, Amra's happy life in her peaceful city vanished. But there is light even in the darkest of times, and she discovered that light in the warm, bonfire eyes of a stray cat. The little calico had followed the refugees into the city and lost her own family. At first, Amra doesn't want to bother with a stray; her family doesn't have the money to keep a pet. But with gentle charm this kitty finds her way into everyone's heart, and after a few near miracles when she seems to save the family, how could they turn her away? Here is the stunning true story of a teen who, even in the brutality of war, never wavered in her determination to obtain an education, maintain friendships, and even find a first love-and the cat who gave comfort, hope, and maybe even served as the family's guardian spirit.

Pain, rejection, shame, unworthiness, betrayal, and anger often fill the veins and pump through the hearts of all survivors of molestation and sexual abuse. It is often through self-medication and/or self-destruction that one attempts to drown out these hurtful feelings.Ultimately these coping mechanisms further the downward spiral that already exists. Without the Lord and without faith, letting go is like holding your breath in the middle of the ocean. Eventually, the water fills your lungs, and slowly but surely you sink to the bottom of the ocean floor with no hope of dry land in sight. There will always be pieces of an abused child's story that may ring similar to stories one has read or heard about because the disease is in the spirit of the abuser. It may be a different person but the same spirit in operation.

Sleeping With One Eye Open written by Marilyn Kallet and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Literary Collections categories.

How do women writers cope with changes and juggle the demands in their already full lives to make time for their lives as artists? In this anthology, noted female novelists, journalists, essayists, poets, and nonfiction writers address the old and new challenges of "doing it all" that face women writers as the twenty-first century approaches. With eloquence, sensitivity, and more than a touch of wry humor, Sleeping with One Eye Open relates positive stories from women who lead effective lives as artists, emphasizing how sources of inspiration, discipline, resourcefulness, and determination help them succeed despite the obstacle of "no time." The title essay, Judith Ortiz Cofer's "The Woman Who Slept with One Eye Open," defines the collection. Cofer relates the ways in which a mythological story from her Puerto Rican culture gave her confidence and courage, encouraging her creative success and emphasizing the rewards of "women's power" and personal strength. Denise Levertov's "The Vital Necessity" urges poets to make time for daydreams--essential, empowering creative food. Tillie Olsen offers a frank discussion of the pressures of work and expectations that too often sap creative energy. Tess Gallagher connects her mother's creative gardening with her own inspiration as a poet and the need for growth in her writing. Marilyn Kallet's interview with Lucille Clifton relates the personal strength that helped Clifton raise six children and publish her first book at the same time. This affirming collection offers a wealth of writing advice, given through honest accounts of perseverance and accomplishment.

Spring 2008. The art world is awash with money, and Piers Guest is getting his share. Celebrated art mogul, critic, impresario and 'adviser' with a client list ranging from the wealthiest of individual collectors to an international merchant bank, he is a bona fide member of the glitterati. Graced with his own beauty, he gallivants through London's galleries, cafés and hotels, playground for multi-millionaire artists, financiers and infidelity, while still enjoying a Chelsea mansion with his wife and daughter. Until a mysterious meeting about a newly discovered masterpiece begins a hunt that will lead him onto an altogether different terrain... 1933. Under the shadow of the newly elected Nazi party, Helga and Ernst Mann bring a disabled child into the world. While her husband Ernst, a folklorist, drifts near the baleful influence of the Third Reich, Helga will stop at nothing to keep her child safe. 1890. Vincent Van Gogh is living out his last few weeks in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise. Tormented by illness and regret, his only companions are the melancholy Dr Gachet, the ghosts of his own past, and the group of disturbed but engaging patients being treated by Gachet. Taking up his brush, he paints the picture that will draw so many disparate lives together. From the troubled genius of Vincent Van Gogh to the wartime birch forests of Ukraine, from the scintillating labyrinths of contemporary art and commerce to a mother's desperate journey across Germany into the teeth of the Red Army, Jonathan Tulloch's novel examines madness and creativity, love and destruction, the painting of a picture and the lust to own.
