This edited book analyzes Kosovo’s foreign policy and bilateral relations with the United States and several European countries. After the 1999 liberation from Serbia, Kosovo built close relations with various countries that supported it in the process of reconstruction, economic stabilization, institution-building, and state-building. From 1999 to 2008, many of these states were politically and operationally engaged in Kosovo under the leadership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). Since its independence in 2008, the Republic of Kosovo has adopted a foreign policy in accordance with its values and strategic interests, a foreign policy that aims to strengthen Kosovo’s security and foster its socio-economic prosperity in collaboration with primarily Western countries. In this volume, each chapter is dedicated to Kosovo’s bilateral relations with a selected state with which it has established diplomatic relations. The book shows that Kosovo has been able to develop and achieve strong bilateral relations with major allies and partners. It argues that Kosovo’s foreign policy aims to develop, maintain, and enhance the position of the young state on the international stage. The volume bridges various methodological and disciplinary approaches in order to present Kosovo’s foreign policy objectives and the trajectory of its relations with some of its most important international partners. This book will be of interest to students of Balkan politics, state-building, foreign policy, and International Relations.

Selecting candidates for elections is a major goal of political parties and a major function of political regimes in democratic systems. With the negative effects of the economic crisis being seen to translate into changes in voting patterns, and citizens using elections to punish parties in government for their roles in economic mismanagement or lack of response to the global economic crisis, a broad examination is required. This book is presented as the first comparative study of the effects of the political crisis on candidate selection covering a large number of countries. Using an integrated framework and unified strategy, it examines how new relevant political actors are really implementing participative ways of candidate selection, whether they are being innovative in their political environments and the extent to which traditionally mainstream parties are changing selection procedures to have more open and inclusive mechanisms as part of internal, or intra-party, democracy. The book illuminates these issues through empirically driven chapters explaining changes in the way candidates for parliaments are selected in countries where new parties have emerged and consolidated, or where traditional mainstream parties have adopted new mechanisms of selection affecting (if not challenging) traditional politics. Additionally, therefore, this work will serve as a response to some current debates in the discipline on the consequences of the democratization of party life, relating political participation and representation. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of political parties, organizational change, social and political elites and more broadly to comparative politics and sociology.

Über 100 Jahre Geschichte umfasst Manfried Rauchensteiners überarbeitete und erweiterte Neuauflage seines 2017 erstmals erschienenen Buches "Unter Beobachtung. Österreich seit 1918". Der mehrfach preisgekrönte Historiker bietet damit einen spannenden und abwechslungsreichen Überblick über die historischen Entwicklungen des Landes. Österreich war - und ist - immer wieder für Aufregungen gut. Was 1918 mit der Gründung der Ersten Republik als Experiment begann, war 1938 auch schon wieder gescheitert, was viele Menschen mit Genugtuung registrierten. 1945 stellten die vier Besatzungsmächte das Land unter Kuratel. Und auch in der Folge sorgte Österreich immer wieder für internationale Aufmerksamkeit: 1956 während des Volksaufstands in Ungarn, 1968 bei der Besetzung der Tschechoslowakei, 1986 nach der Wahl Kurt Waldheims zum österreichischen Bundespräsidenten, 1991 während des slowenischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges, 2000 nach der Bildung einer Kleinen Koalition, nach der "Ibiza-Affäre" 2019 bis hin zur aktuellen Corona-Krise. Das Land galt als Problemzone, als Sonderfall, als Musterschüler und gleich mehrfach als böser Bube, dem man ganz genau auf die Finger schauen wollte. Das tut die Welt bis heute.
