The globalizing influence of professional sports Professional sports today have truly become a global force, a common language that anyone, regardless of their nationality, can understand. Yet sports also remain distinctly local, with regional teams and the fiercely loyal local fans that follow them. This book examines the twenty-first-century phenomenon of global sports, in which professional teams and their players have become agents of globalization while at the same time fostering deep-seated and antagonistic local allegiances and spawning new forms of cultural conflict and prejudice. Although the Wunderteam was short-lived, this squad led by Hugo Meisl, one of the most prominent figures in European football, proved hugely influential. In her teens, Helene Krulich fell in love with a young Kurdish student in Prague and married him. This is how she became involved in the Kurds' fight for their basic rights in Kurdish leader Abdol Rahman Ghassemlou's native country Iran while living in Czechoslovakia. Mostly living clandestinely, she passed through Iraq and Syria with members of the respective Kurdish freedom-fighters. She became a contemporary witness of history in her own native country, Czechoslovakia, from the Soviet occupation to its EU-membership. She faced Ghassemlou's assassination upon state order by Iranian "peace-negotiators" in Vienna in 1989. She fought for an investigation of the crime by Austria's police and legal institutions in vain. This memoir as a very personal "history from below" of her time fighting for Kurdish freedom. Die Beiträge erörtern die Rolle des Hörfunks bei der Konstruktion neuer und alter nationaler, sozialer, kultureller und religiöser Identitäten. Der Einfluss einzelner Radiomacher*innen auf die Gestaltung der Programme wird thematisiert, wie auch die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Dynamiken, die manche Radiosendungen auslösten. Schließlich werden auch Parallelen der Medienlogik und Mediennutzung zwischen dem Radio (Frühzeit) und dem Internet zur Diskussion gestellt. For decades, radio was the most up-to-date and the only live news medium. Broadcasting had no (state) boundaries, and the political rulers knew how to make the best possible use of this. This volume provides insight into interdisciplinary research on radio history. The contributions discuss the role of radio in the construction of new and old national, social, cultural and religious identities. The influence of individual radio producers on the design of programs is addressed, as are the political and social dynamics that triggered some radio broadcasts. Finally, parallels in media logic and media use between radio (early days) and the Internet will be discussed.
