Nach der Aufarbeitung der Frühgeschichte des Bundesnachrichtendienstes und des Bundesamtes für Verfassungsschutz folgt die Geschichte des dritten Nachrichtendienstes der Bundesrepublik, der Militärische Abschirmdienst der Bundeswehr (MAD). Dieser ist für die Sicherheit der Bundeswehr zuständig. Erstmals liegt eine aktengestützte Geschichte der Organisation und ihrer Mitarbeiter von 1956 bis 1990 vor. Darüber hinaus wird das schwierige Verhältnis des MAD zu den Medien thematisiert. Wie bei den anderen Nachrichtendiensten auch, gibt es beim MAD Kontinuitäten und Brüche. Insgesamt hat sich der MAD gegen einen personell und materiell stets überlegenen Gegner trotz einiger Pannen und Skandale meist durchsetzen können.
