Animation und Comic weisen in ihren Ästhetiken offenkundige Parallelen auf, denen jedoch bislang in der jeweils einschlägigen Forschung kaum angemessene Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wurde. Beide basieren auf künstlerischen Praktiken, die unter Einsatz spezifischer Techniken Bilder generieren, welche wiederum diese Techniken ihrer Entstehung in einer besonderen Art und Weise mit-ausstellen. So verweisen die gezeichneten Linien des Comics oder des Cartoons auf den Akt des Zeichnens selbst, die Knetfiguren im Stop-Motion-Animationsfilm auf den Akt ihrer händischen (Ver-)Formung oder die hyperrealistischen, überhöhten Figuren des Superheld_innen-Comics und VFX-Kinos auf ihren Status als Artefakte. Diese für ganz unterschiedliche Formen von Animation und Comics konstitutive Thematisierung der eigenen Gemachtheit bildet den Hauptgegenstand des vorliegenden Bandes, in dessen Rahmen aus einer dezidiert interdisziplinären Perspektive die Parallelen, Schnittstellen und Unterschiede herausgearbeitet werden, die sich im Kontext von Animations- und Comicforschung mit Blick auf die methodisch-analytische Erfassung der Materialität und Ästhetik ihrer jeweiligen Gegenstände ergeben.

This edited collection explores how the relationship between comic art and feminism has been shaped by global, transnational, and local trends, curating analyses of multinational comic art that encompass themes of gender, sexuality, power, vulnerability, assault, abuse, taboo, and trauma. The chapters illuminate in turn the defining features of the aesthetics, materiality, and thematic content of their source material – often expressed with humorous undertones of self-reflection or social criticism – as well as recurring strategies of visualising and narrating female experiences. Broadening the research perspective of feminist comics to include national comics cultures peripheral to the cultural centers of Anglo-American, Franco-Belgian, and Japanese comics, the anthology explores how the dominant narrative or history of canonical works can be challenged or deconstructed by local histories of comics and feminism and their transnational connections, and how local histories complement or challenge the current understanding of the relationship between feminism and comic art. Beiträge aus Forschung und Anwendung – Emanuela Sanfelici: On the strength of D0: case resolution phenomena in free relative clauses Abstract: This paper proposes a novel account of free relative clauses (RCs), which associates case resolution patterns to the typology of D0 heads à la Longobardi (1994), Guardiano & Longobardi (2005). Although free RCs generally obey matching requirements, certain languages tolerate configurations where the case assigned by the matrix clause to the nominal phrase containing the free RC conflicts with that assigned within the RC. Languages vary as to whether they allow for case conflicting configurations and apply case resolution, and, if they do, as to whether the case conflict is resolved in compliance with that assigned from the matrix or the RC probe. By adopting a cartographic approach to free RCs, I account for the linguistic variation by means of two ingredients: (a) the property of the D0 head in a given language, strong vs. weak D0, and, in turn, of the feature-sharing mechanisms between D0 and the lower heads; (b) the operation of chain reduction phrased in terms of a subset relation. – Christian Hugo Hoffmann: Die Philosophie der Philosophie: Was zeichnet genuin philosophische Fragen aus? Abstract: Philosophy cannot be studied without becoming engaged in philosophy itself. Taking Timothy Williamson's seminal work "The Philosophy of Philosophy" as a point of departure for this analysis at hand, and a specific question therein, in his book, presented by him as genuinely philosophical, we discuss in this paper what characterizes distinguished philosophical questions and what does not. While Williamson responds critically to the so-called linguistic and conceptual turn considered central to (analytic) philosophy by con-tending that his chosen question, representative of many more, is philosophical but not even implicitly meta-linguistic or meta-conceptual, our contribution is different and three-fold: first, in homage to Williamson, we show that he might not achieve his argumentative goal. Going beyond the limited framework set by his monograph, we further argue, second and more generally, that the predicate "being a philosophical question" (such as his model question) suffers from vagueness. Der Begriff der Agency – nur unbefriedigend als 'Handlungsmacht', 'Handlungspotenzial' oder 'Handlungsinitiative' ins Deutsche übersetzbar – ist in verschiedensten wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen unverzichtbar, um Prozesse gegenseitiger Einflussnahme, die Reichweite oder den Ausschluss von Handlungsspielräumen oder Verantwortung für konkrete Vorgänge zu bestimmen. In der Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft hat er lange Zeit keine systematische Rolle gespielt. Erst in Reaktion auf Perspektiven der seit den 1990er-Jahren boomenden Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie (ANT) und daran anschließenden Entwürfen der Medienwissenschaft wurden vergleichbare Konzepte von medial verteilter Handlungsmacht entwickelt. Gegenüber solchen eher theoriegeleiteten Studien nehmen die Autor*innen des vorliegenden Bandes verschiedene exemplarische Medienkonfigurationen in den Blick und versuchen das Erklärungspotenzial von 'Agency' als medienwissenschaftlicher Schlüsselkategorie aus der Perspektive ihres jeweiligen Forschungsfeldes genauer zu bestimmen. Unter den Bedingungen der 'Postdigitalität' – der Annahme, dass kaum noch 'nicht-digitale' Medienbereiche auszumachen sind und der Begriff der 'Digitalisierung' deshalb gewissermaßen bedeutungslos geworden ist – lassen sich gegenüber früheren Zugängen insbesondere zwei medienwissenschaftliche Facetten von Agency neu diskutieren: Zum einen, inwiefern neben menschlichen Akteuren auch neu entstandenen nicht-menschlichen Entitäten ein solches Handlungspotenzial zuzurechnen ist. Zum anderen wären im postdigitalen Raum auch die relativen Handlungs(un)fähigkeiten von individuellen, kollektiven und institutionellen Akteur*innen neu zu bestimmen, wo Handlungsketten oder Kommunikationsmuster zunehmend durch den verfügbaren oder beschränkten Zugang zu Ressourcen sowie den Affordanzen von digitalen Medienkonfigurationen gekennzeichnet sind. Agency postdigital bringt diese beiden Aspekte zusammen und zeichnet eine Karte der veränderten Verteilung und Manifestation von Handlungsmacht in der postdigitalen Welt entlang exemplarischer medienwissenschaftlicher Forschungsfelder.

This book reflects and analyzes the relationship between media and genre, focusing on both aesthetics and discursive meaning. It considers genres as having a decisive impact on media cultures, either in film, on TV, in computer games, comics or radio, on the level of production as well as reception. The book discusses the role of genres in media and cultural theory as a configuration of media artifacts that share specific aesthetic characteristics. Obwohl Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841) und die an ihn anschließende Ästhetiktradition eine hegemoniale Stellung in den geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen des 19. Jahrhunderts innehatten, ist die herbartianische Ästhetik und das mit ihr verbundene formalistische Theorieprogramm aus dem heutigen Wissenschaftsbewusstsein verschwunden. Die Quellenedition präsentiert erstmals Texte derjenigen Autoren, die zwischen 1820 und 1920 eine formalistische Ästhetik auf herbartianischer Grundlage erarbeitet haben. Gewirkt hat dieser frühe Formalismus in drei Hinsichten: Erstens hat er zu einer funktionalistischen Neukonzeption des Formbegriffs und seiner metaphysischen Traditionen geführt; zweitens hat er Methodik und Selbstverständnis der geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung im 20. Jahrhundert geprägt; drittens hat er den diversen europäischen Strukturalismen vorgearbeitet. Die Edition macht damit unbekannte Grundlagen der geisteswissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung und der philosophischen Ästhetik zugänglich. Berücksichtigt wird dabei auch die tschechische Theorielinie in deutschen Erstübersetzungen.
