स्वामी विवेकानन्द की मानसपुत्री के रूप में सुपरिचित, उनकी प्रिय शिष्या भगिनी निवेदिता द्वारा अपने गुरुदेव के विषय में अंग्रेजी में लिखित ‘The Master As I Saw Him’ नामक सुप्रसिद्ध ग्रन्थ का हिन्दी अनुवाद प्रस्तुत करते हुए हमें अपार हर्ष का अनुभव हो रहा है। स्वामीजी ने, अमेरिका की अपनी दिग्विजय-यात्रा के दौरान यूरोप का भी दौरा किया था। वहाँ उनके प्रभावक्षेत्र में आनेवालों में एक अंग्रेज आयरिश महिला – कुमारी मार्गरेट नोबल भी एक थीं। परवर्ती काल में स्वामीजी ने उन्हें अपनी शिष्या के रूप में स्वीकार किया और उन्हें ‘भगिनी निवेदिता’ नाम दिया। भगिनी को अनेकों बार अपने गुरुदेव के साथ भ्रमण तथा निवास करने का सुयोग प्राप्त हुआ था। उन सान्निध्यों के दौरान उनके भावनेत्रों के समक्ष स्वामीजी के चरित्र के अनेक विशिष्ट पहलू अभिव्यक्त हुए थे, यथा – उनका अलौकिक व्यक्तित्व, उनका ऋषितुल्य जीवन, उनके द्वारा हिन्दू-धर्म में आनीत नवीन जागृति तथा उदारता का भाव, उनका मानवप्रेम, उनकी असीम देशभक्ति और उनकी अलौकिक दैवी शक्ति। बाद में उन्होंने अपनी इन अनुभूतियों को इस ग्रन्थ में सविस्तार प्रस्तुत किया। वे लिखती हैं – “उदात्त आदर्श – हमारे गुरुदेव के चिन्तन की इकाई थे, परन्तु ये आदर्श इतने सजीव हो उठते कि कोई यह सोच भी नहीं पाता था कि वे भाववाचक हैं। इन आदर्शों की सहायता से वे व्यक्ति और राष्ट्र – दोनों की ही समान रूप से, उनकी नैतिक उन्नति के मापदण्ड से व्याख्या करते।” स्वामीजी ने भी अपनी प्रिय शिष्या को कविता के रूप में एक अत्यन्त अद्भुत आशीर्वाद दिया था – माँ का हृदय, वीर की दृढ़ता दक्षिण के मलयानिल की सुमधुरता, वे पवित्र आकर्षण और शक्तिपुंज, जो आर्य वेदिकाओं पर, मुक्त और उद्दाम दमकते हैं; वे सब तेरे हों, और वह सब भी तेरा हो, जिसको अतीत में, कभी स्वप्न में भी न किसी ने सोचा हो तू हो जा भारत की भावी सन्तानों के हेतु स्वामिनी, सेविका, मित्र एकाकार। (२२ सितम्बर १९०० ई. को फ्रांस के ब्रिटानी से भगिनी निवेदिता के नाम लिखित पत्र के साथ प्रेषित कविता का हिन्दी अनुवाद।) निवेदिता के जीवन में, स्वामीजी का आशीर्वाद पूर्णतः फलीभूत हुआ था। उन्होंने भारत में नारीशिक्षा के विकास में अग्रदूत का कार्य किया और साथ ही राष्ट्रीय स्वाधीनता के आन्दोलन के राजनेताओं के साथ ही, क्रान्तिकारी योद्धाओं को भी विविध प्रकार से प्रेरणा तथा मार्गदर्शन देते हुए उनकी सहायता की थी। स्वामी विवेकानन्द के भारत लौटने के बाद, उनके आह्वान के उत्तर में १८९८ ई. के प्रारम्भ में वे भारत आयीं। पवित्रता, त्याग, तपस्या तथा सेवाव्रत – इन आध्यात्मिक आदर्शों से अनुप्राणित होकर, स्वामीजी की इस पाश्चात्य शिष्या ने, उन्हीं के मार्गदर्शन में भारतीय स्त्रियों को शिक्षित तथा आत्मनिर्भर बनाने के कार्य में स्वयं को खपा दिया। एक दृष्टि से कहें, तो हमारे देश में भगिनी निवेदिता ने ही भारतीय परम्पराओं के अनुसार ‘आधुनिक नारीशिक्षा’ का बीजारोपण किया था। भारत की उदात्त संस्कृति एवं भारतीय आम-जनता के साथ उनके जीवन का इतना गहरा तादात्म्य हो गया था कि एक भारतीय मनीषी ने उन्हें ‘लोकमाता’ की आख्या देकर उन्हें गौरव प्रदान किया था।
