Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen (Englisches Seminar), course: Oberseminar: King Arthur's Death, language: English, abstract: The concept of Fortuna and her wheel, or to be more general of fate and fortune itself in ancient and medieval literary and philosophical culture has been the topic of numerous investigations stretching over cultural and temporal boundaries. Beginning with the Roman and early medieval tradition culminating in Boethius De Consolatione Philosophiae scholars have tried to apply the concept of Fortuna to nearly every literary production from Cicero up to Shakespeare’s Renaissance conception of medieval tragedy and Fortune’s influence upon it. On the other hand, Arthurian literature as a literary product has not only influenced the evolution of the European literary canon, but has itself been struck by several literary and philosophical concepts. For Arthurian matters this fusion of traditions becomes most obvious in the anonymously composed Alliterative Morte Arthure; here, both the Boethian and the medieval tradition of Lady Fortune as the mistress of human fate and the hence resulting beginnings of early medieval tragedy come to the surface. As a concept not only closely linked to the wheel of Fortune but also to Arthurian literature per se the topos of the Nine Worthies, introduced for the first time by the fourteenth-century writer Jaques de Languyon in his Veux du Paon, also has to be taken into consideration. The Nine Worthies as a representation of Fortune’s grace and disposal with King Arthur being mentioned in the Alliterative Morte Arthure as one of the greatest amongst them, the fusion of all the concepts mentioned in the above has reached its zenith. In the following, this paper will try to elaborate on the literary and philosophical concepts mentioned above, with a particular interest in the tradition of Fortuna and her appearance in the Alliterative Morte Arthure. Beginning with the commencements of the topos in late Roman and early medieval literature, I will try to exemplify the development of the concept with reference to Boethius’ De Consolatione Philospohiae and the Italo-English understanding and deployment of the de casibus tragedies, and answer the question of whether or not the AMA can be added to this genre. In doing so, the relation of the Alliterative Morte Arthure to the progress of the medieval tragic concept will be highlighted. Finally, the Alliterative Morte Arthure will serve as the textual basis when both, the concept of Fortune and the Nine Worthies, as well as their amalgamation will be examined.

As Robert discovers, his rational, well-ordered mind will be forever altered by his obsession for Ginevra, and his destiny will be forever linked to Oxmoon by the skeletons which lurk in the family closet... For fifty years, from the sinister summer afternoon of 1913 to the 1960s, the Godwin family are sucked into a maelstrom of passion, disorder, madness and murder. Fortunes rise and fall in this sweeping, compulsive tale, until the Wheel of Fortune finally comes full circle.

Humanity has thrown everything we have at implacable luck-novel theologies, entire philosophical movements, fresh branches of mathematics-and yet we seem to have gained only the smallest edge on the power of fortune. The Myth of Luck tells us why we have been fighting an unconquerable foe. Taking us on a guided tour of one of our oldest concepts, we begin in ancient Greece and Rome, considering how Plato, Plutarch, and the Stoics understood luck, before entering the theoretical world of probability and exploring how luck relates to theology, sports, ethics, gambling, knowledge, and present-day psychology. As we travel across traditions, times and cultures, we come to realize that it's not that as soon as we solve one philosophical problem with luck that two more appear, like heads on a hydra, but rather that the monster is altogether mythological. We cannot master luck because there is nothing to defeat: luck is no more than a persistent and troubling illusion. By introducing us to compelling arguments and convincing reasons that explain why there is no such thing as luck, we finally see why in a very real sense we make our own luck, that luck is our own doing. The Myth of Luck helps us to regain our own agency in the world - telling the entertaining story of the philosophy and history of luck along the way.

Arguably the single most influential literary work of the European Middle Ages, the Roman de la Rose of Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun has traditionally posed a number of difficulties to modern critics, who have viewed its many interruptions and philosophical discussions as signs of a lack of formal organization and a characteristically medieval predilection for encyclopedic summation. In Fortune's Faces, Daniel Heller-Roazen calls into question these assessments, offering a new and compelling interpretation of the romance as a carefully constructed and far-reaching exploration of the place of fortune, chance, and contingency in literary writing. Situating the Romance of the Rose at the intersection of medieval literature and philosophy, Heller-Roazen shows how the thirteenth-century work invokes and radicalizes two classical and medieval traditions of reflection on language and contingency: that of the Provençal, French, and Italian love poets, who sought to compose their "verses of pure nothing"in a language Dante defined as "without grammar," and that of Aristotle's discussion of "future contingents" as it was received and refined in the logic, physics, theology, and epistemology of Boethius, Abelard, Albert the Great, and Thomas Aquinas.Through a close analysis of the poetic text and a detailed reconstruction of the logical and metaphysical concept of contingency, Fortune's Faces charts the transformations that literary structures (such as subjectivity, autobiography, prosopopoeia, allegory, and self-reference) undergo in a work that defines itself as radically contingent. Considered in its full poetic and philosophical dimensions, the Romance of the Rose thus acquires an altogether new significance in the history of literature: it appears as a work that incessantly explores its own capacity to be other than it is.

EVIL FROM BEYOND TIME RULES THE GREATEST EMPIRE ON EARTH! Link, the supercomputer from a future that should not exist, has used terror and gunpowder weapons to forge the Malwa Empire: harnessing the vast manpower of the Indian subcontinent and using the barbarian races of the periphery to bind the whole together. No power on Earth in the 6th century could stand against Link's evil. Aide, a human soul embodied in a jewel, has come back to halt evil's progress. Aide has no power but that of truth, but truth is the only power that could move the greatest general of the age, Belisarius. With his sword, his paladins, and his genius, Belisarius has turned the armies of Byzantium into a weapon capable of blunting the first assault of the Malwa hordes. Now, supported by allies from all the world yet free, Belisarius, with his wife and co-commander Antonia, faces overwhelming Malwa numbers in a ring that tightens about them. There is no room for maneuver and no safety in defeat. The armies of Good and Evil gathered on the fertile plains of Mesopotamia will decide the fate of the world. And the fate of all the future!
