On 2nd December 1941, just before the start of the Pacific War, Australian military planners noted Portuguese Timor as 'the entrance door to Australia'. Although Portugal was neutral in World War II, fifteen days later, a joint Australian and Dutch military force invaded and this precipitated a Japanese attack on Timor two months later, and a bitter occupation. Prior this, there had been haphazard contacts between Australians and Timorese, especially with a number of expeditions to locate deposits of oil. This book is the first to detail the early contacts of Australia and Australians with Portuguese Timor. 'This is a story that should be told ... It should be on the reading list for every secondary school in Australia. Then, our understanding of the newly independent nation of East Timor, one of our nearest neighbours, would be better understood and appreciated.' Hon Steve Bracks AC Premier of Victorian 1999 to 2007 Governance Adviser to Former Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao"

In a new historical interpretation of the relationship between Australia and East Timor, Susan Connelly draws on the mimetic theory of René Girard to show how the East Timorese people were scapegoated by Australian foreign policy during the 20th century. Charting key developments in East Timor's history and applying three aspects of Girard's framework – the scapegoat, texts of persecution and conversion – Connelly reveals Australia's mimetic dependence on Indonesia and other nations for security. She argues that Australia's complicity in the Indonesian invasion and occupation of East Timor perpetuated the sacrifice of the Timorese people as victims, thus calling into question the traditional Australian values of egalitarianism and fairness. Connelly also examines the embryonic conversion process apparent in levels of recognition of the innocent victim and of the Australian role in East Timor's suffering, as well as the consequent effects on Australian self-perception. Emphasising Girardian considerations of fear, suffering, forgiveness and conversion, this book offers a fresh perspective on Australian and Timorese relations that in turn sheds light on the origins and operations of human violence.

'This account . . . is breathtaking in its scope and riveting in its research' - Sydney Morning Herald The gripping story of a small force of Australian Special Forces commandos that launched relentless hit and run raids on far superior Japanese forces in East Timor for most of 1942. These Australians were the men of the 2/2nd Australian Independent Company - a special commando unit. Initially stranded without radio contact to Australia, the Japanese declared these bearded warriors ‘outlaws’ and warned they would be executed immediately if captured. The Australians drawn mainly from the bush, were chosen for their ability to operate independently and survive in hostile territory. As film-maker Damien Parer said after visiting in Timor in late 1942, ‘these men are writing an epic of guerrilla warfare’. Expertly researched by Paul Cleary, who is fluent in Tetum, the main language of the indigenous group of East Timor, it also contains insightful black and white photos. 'A cracker of a read' - The Age 'Paul Cleary has brought to life one of the great success stories of World War II' - Daily Telegraph

In 1999, in a remote corner of the world, something almost miraculous happened. After 500 years of colonialism, the political stars finally aligned and the people of Timor-Leste, written off as losers in the face of irreversible odds, successfully voted for freedom. Twenty years on, Pat Walsh remembers the day like it was yesterday. In this colourful collection of stories about Timor-Leste, he also draws on his many years living in Dili to recall with wry affection the city’s traffic, roosters and a motley array of characters. The latter range from a Norwegian bishop to a cockfight promoter, an Australian called Dagg, a honey seller, a cat with only six lives, a girl called Menahaha, and two intellectual giants whose contributions to their human rights are largely unknown in Timor-Leste. Believing that the past is a friend to lean on, not an enemy, he also takes the opportunity to remind the Indonesian military of their failings. But, in the same vein, he also laments the futile loss of Indonesian lives, the damage to Indonesia’s dignity, and the subversion of the rules-based international order that marked the 24 year occupation. Written with touches of humour, The Day Hope and History Rhymed in East Timor is a personal, insightful, and sometimes whimsical, set of narratives that fills a gap between the academic and the trivial on this endearing, but improbable, new nation.

Making Aboriginal Men And Music In Central Australia written by Åse Ottosson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-19 with Social Science categories.

This detailed ethnographic study explores the intercultural crafting of contemporary forms of Aboriginal manhood in the world of country, rock and reggae music making in Central Australia. Focusing on four different musical contexts – an Aboriginal recording studio, remote Aboriginal settlements, small non-indigenous towns, and tours beyond the musicians' homeland – the author challenges existing scholarly, political and popular understandings of Australian Aboriginal music, men, and related indigenous matters in terms of radical social, cultural and racial difference. Based on extensive anthropological field research among Aboriginal rock, country and reggae musicians in small towns and remote desert settlements in Central Australia, the book investigates how Aboriginal musicians experience and articulate various aspects of their male and indigenous sense of selves as they make music and engage with indigenous and non-indigenous people, practices, places, and sets of values. Making Aboriginal Men and Music is a highly original, intimate study which advances our understanding of contemporary indigenous and male identity formation within Aboriginal Australian society. Providing new analytical insights for scholars and students in fields such as social and cultural anthropology, cultural studies, popular music, and gender studies, this engaging text makes a significant contribution to the study of indigenous identity formation in remote Australia and beyond.
