The essential lesson of the new superconductors and the latest developments on the fusion front is the beautiful demonstrat ion of the unity of physics and geometry, a unity that lay at the basis of the great discoveries of Leonardo, the father of modern science and technology. [...] Indeed, the greatest benefit that we may see f rom the work of Fleischmann and Pons could well be in the realm of pure theory, as serious scientists are drawn to reconsider the well-springs of our culture, beginning wi th the scientific writ ings of Plato and leading f rom there through the great traditions of the Christian humanist scientists. [...] The Transrapid maglev is outf i t ted wi th conventional electromagnets and uses the attraction between the mag- nets in the guideway and those in the vehicle to lift the train about 3/8 of an inch. [...] In the repul- sive system the magnetic field in the guideway repels the same polarity in the coils in the car's underside. [...] The clearance between the guideway and the vehicle determines the designs of the guideway, the propulsion systems, and the secondary suspension systems.

How are processes of vision, perception, and sensation conceived in the Renaissance? How are those conceptions made manifest in the arts? The essays in this volume address these and similar questions to establish important theoretical and philosophical bases for artistic production in the Renaissance and beyond. The essays also attend to the views of historically significant writers from the ancient classical period to the eighteenth century, including Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, St Augustine, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), Ibn Sahl, Marsilio Ficino, Nicholas of Cusa, Leon Battista Alberti, Gian Paolo Lomazzo, Gregorio Comanini, John Davies, Rene Descartes, Samuel van Hoogstraten, and George Berkeley. Contributors carefully scrutinize and illustrate the effect of changing and evolving ideas of intellectual and physical vision on artistic practice in Florence, Rome, Venice, England, Austria, and the Netherlands. The artists whose work and practices are discussed include Fra Angelico, Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci, Filippino Lippi, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael, Parmigianino, Titian, Bronzino, Johannes Gumpp and Rembrandt van Rijn. Taken together, the essays provide the reader with a fresh perspective on the intellectual confluence between art, science, philosophy, and literature across Renaissance Europe.

This remarkable manuscript is almost 500 years old and was hand-written in Italian by Leonardo da Vinci in his characteristic "mirror writing" and supported by copious sketches. It covers a wide range of his observations and theories on astronomy, the properties of water, rocks, fossils, air, and celestial light. The Codex Leicester provides a rare insight into the inquiring mind of the definitive Renaissance artist, scientist, and thinker as well as an exceptional illustration of the link between art and science and the creativity of the scientific process. Each delicate page is faithfully reproduced and accompanied by an insightful interpretation of the original Italian texts by the foremost Leonardo scholar, Professor Carlo Pedretti. There is also an introductory essay by Michael Desmond.

A travelogue full of adventure, A Place to Belong is the story of a young teenage boy's search for self worth and faith in a cruel world. Paul Miller was eight years old when his parents took him on a mystifying, zigzagging journey, from Detroit to Florida, to California and back again. His father's tenuous grip on reality becomes as changeable as the landscapes they travel through. Paul's simple questions are ignored or answered by the back of his Father's hand. Paul jumps the roof-tops of Detroit slums, butts heads with the gangs of Los Angeles and gets caught up in a world of petty theft. Life hangs by bus fare, the surprising kindness of a loving family, a filthy motorist with a penchant for young boys, the kiss of a young girl. Along the way, Noah, a wise fisherman, shows Paul that God isn't some imperious judge sitting on top of a throne, but can become your best friend, a buddy you can talk to. " But can such a simple view account for all the misery Paul experiences?" In this captivating and at turns humorous story, a young man travels into the depths of despair and back again to find a place he can call home. "I got hooked and couldn't stop. This is a splendidly written story and quite a story to tell. So candid, unpretentious, and courageous." David Morris, Senior Editor Guideposts Books. "Miller tells a remarkable story, one that is in a sense an American Angela's Ashes but with the added element of faith as a factor in surviving an incredibly rough childhood." Michael Wilt, Editor, Nimble Spirit.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s Elements of the Science of Man describes how Da Vinci integrates his mechanical observations and experiments in mechanics into underlying principles. This book is composed of 17 chapters that highlight the principles underlying Da Vinci’s research in anatomical studies. Considerable chapters deal with Leonardo’s scientific methods and the mathematics of his pyramidal law, as well as his observations on the human and animal movements. Other chapters describe the artist’s anatomical approach to the mechanism of the human body, specifically the physiology of vision, voice, music, senses, soul, and the nervous system. The remaining chapters examine the mechanism of the bones, joints, respiration, heart, digestion, and urinary and reproductive systems.

The Topkapi Scroll written by Gülru Necipoğlu and has been published by Getty Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-03-01 with Art categories.

Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.
