The Senator written by Richard E. Burke and has been published by Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-12-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 1971 Richard Burke, a freshman at Georgetown University, volunteered his services to the offices of his political idol, Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts. Through ability, hard work, and dedication, Burke rose in the next four years to become one of the Senator's closest staff members. In 1977 he was made Kennedy's personal assistant; after his appointment in 1978 as administrative assistant - the youngest in the Senate - he came to know Edward M. Kennedy perhaps more intimately than anyone outside the closed circle of the Senator's family. He was often the last to see the Senator at night and the first to see him in the morning. This book is the account of what Richard Burke witnessed and experienced during his decade at the Senator's right hand. It is neither a full biography nor an examination of Kennedy's long career in government. Rather, it is the history of a young man who shared the Senator's professional and personal lives during a time marked by exhilarating public achievements and tragic secret misconduct. His story is not only the chronicle of a shattered idol, but of Richard Burke's own fall from grace, and eventual recovery. Burke does not shrink from confronting his own faults, and he agrees with the Senator: It is time for him to confront his.

One of America's most beloved storytellers, Father Andrew Greeley returns with an explosive novel about the corrosive political culture tearing apart America--and one man's family. Tommy Moran, an Irish Catholic kid from the West Side of Chicago, fights for the underprivileged on the floor of the United States Senate. Swearing off negative attack ads, Moran is determined to restore civility and compassion to American politics. But his opponents don't share his scruples. Almost from the beginning, Tommy and his family find themselves besieged by vicious personal attacks, false rumors . . . and attempts at assassination! As a freshman senator, Tommy must also cope with the temptations--both political and carnal--regularly thrown his way. The job takes its toll on him, but at least he has the support and love of his devoted wife, a daughter of Chicago's raucous O'Malley family. But the opposition that hits home the hardest comes from an unlikely source: his own brother. Father Tony Moran, a conservative Catholic priest, has never approved of Tommy's senatorial career, much to Tommy's dismay. So when Father Tony sides with Tommy's political enemies, it may be more than one man can bear. Can anything heal the rift between...the Senator and the Priest? Officer Robert Williams gets his Masters Degree in Criminal Justice and is quickly promoted from road duties to command duties with a rank of Captain. He is placed in command of the Waycross, Georgia patrol post. His assistant is Ron Astro. Rons wife is Dr. Linda Astro, professor of political science at Waycross College. Governor Nathan Deal had the responsibility of appointing a new U.S. Senator upon the death by heart attack of the existing junior senator. Officers Ron and Robert had both performed courteous service for the governor and his protection detail on his visits to Waycross. The previous year they and their wives, Dr. Linda and Penny, had attended a governors ball and fundraising dinner at Waycross College. The governor had been impressed with both couples. He was particularly impressed with the economic and political understanding of both Dr. Linda and Robert. When the junior senator died of a heart attack, the governor, already acquainted with Dr. Linda Astro, quickly appointed her to fill the remaining term of that senator as provided by state law. Linda quickly accepted, but didnt mention she was three weeks pregnant. Off to Washington D.C. she went. She represented Georgia quite well, but the child continued to grow within her. Soon she was forced to seek maternity leave. Governor Deal had to appoint someone on a temporary basis while Dr. Linda was in the hospital. This was just too important a time for Georgia not to have two senators in Washington. President Obama was pushing for an increase in the debt ceiling for the current budget year of 2011. He had already shoved down Georgias throat the Obama health care plan. Governor Deal immediately thought of Officer Williams to fill the post temporarily while Dr. Linda was in the hospital. Officer Williams requested and was granted extended leave without pay to temporarily become a U.S. Senator. This book is his story.

Death Of The Senate written by Ben Nelson and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Something is rotten in the U.S. Senate, and the disease has been spreading for some time. But Ben Nelson, former U.S. senator from Nebraska, is not going to let the institution destroy itself without a fight. Death of the Senate is a clear-eyed look inside the Senate chamber and a brutally honest account of the current political reality. In his two terms as a Democratic senator from the red state of Nebraska, Nelson positioned himself as a moderate broker between his more liberal and conservative colleagues and became a frontline player in the most consequential fights of the Bush and Obama years. His trusted centrist position gave him a unique perch from which to participate in some of the last great rounds of bipartisan cooperation, such as the "Gang of 14" that considered nominees for the federal bench--and passed over a young lawyer named Brett Kavanaugh for being too partisan. Nelson learned early on that the key to any negotiation at any level is genuine trust. With humor, insight, and firsthand details, Nelson makes the case that the "heart of the deal" is critical and describes how he focused on this during his time in the Senate. As seen through the eyes of a centrist senator from the Great Plains, Nelson shows how and why the spirit of bipartisanship declined and offers solutions that can restore the Senate to one of the world's most important legislative bodies.
