This is a new edition of this classic book which includes, in its over 700 postcards, many new, powerful propaganda images from nations on both sides of this epic conflict. Here are cards from the Queen's Collection, cards from America, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Rumania, Salonika, Serbia... All are faithfully reproduced from the original, whether in dramatic black and white or in exuberant colour and they are all at least 100 years old. But this is not just a picture book. Here is a rich treasure trove to be dipped into for dilettante pleasure or to be read seriously as a thematic and contemporary history of the war. These cards have been collected over many years and a good number are rare and extremely valuable, both intrinsically and for the fascinating information contained in the informative running text and in the thoughtful captions (an example appears below, just one of the over 700). This is essential reading for anyone who wishes to sense the feelings and emotions of those who lived through, and fought in, the First World War; readers will appreciate the Twitter-like brevity of the captions, the power of the images and enjoy the chase to understand what lies behind them. This handsome and fascinating book uses hundreds of the immensely popular picture postcards of the '14-'18 period to document the course and effects of the Great War, with all its dramatis personae, its humour, suffering, patriotism, sentimentality and fervour.

Til The Boys Come Home is a moving, action-packed Canadian play, about small-town teenage boys and girls whose lives are torn apart by the Second World War. It is told through the eyes of Will. He is probably about forty years old and married with teenage kids of his own. He finds an old photograph that he took years ago in the small town he grew up in. It is a photograph of his friends when he was just a teenager, just before the war. In this picture, they have their whole lives ahead of them. His childhood sweetheart is in the picture and so is his best friend. It is the last time they would all be together. As he talks, the photo comes to life and the audience is taken on a trip into the past. From that small town restaurant of hopes and dreams, to the chilling barracks scenes where one of his lifelong friends is betrayed, to the bittersweet last dance at the restaurant where the boys say goodbye to the girls, some for the last time, to the terrifying realities of battle in Europe where fear and bravery are brothers in arms, to the crushing welcome home, this powerful story of love and war will grip you and not let go. This play is ideally suited for young men and women to perform. Featuring a cast of thirteen. Including eight men and five women, this play is suitable for high school, college and community theatre groups.

At fifteen, Danny O'Brian dreams of being something different than what his union-leader father has become -- and now that the Richards family has moved to town, maybe it's possible. The Richards have everything that the O'Brians seem to lack -- education, money, social standing -- and best of all, they are truly kind to Danny. Everything changes, however, when war takes the two young men far beyond the peaceful streets of Pocatello, Idaho. Dan must fight in the trenches, reluctantly using the one skill he was taught by his father. Meanwhile, Trevor battles the enemy in the skies. But war will not be kind to these two men with a brotherly bond. A lyrical and sweeping story of a friendship unfolding in the days of the First World War, 'Til the Boys Come Home shows that there can be life after tragedy and that sometimes the one we need most desperately to forgive is ourself.--Back cover.

In this meticulously researched anthology, Jerry Silverman uses the popular music of the World War I (1912-1919) to provide a thorough overview of the political and social milieu of the times as well as a sense of the futility of war. Extensive historical notes and period photographs enhance this collection of 59 songschosen for their musical value as much as for their historical significance. Silvernman writes, There were two parallel streams of songs being created during the course of 'the war to end all wars'-one by the soldiers 'over there' and theother by songwriters 'over here'. Tin Pan Alley titles include: It's a Long Way to Tipperary, 'Til the Boys Come Home (Keep the Home Fires Burning), I Don't Want to War, I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier, I've Got the Army Blues, Hello Central-Give Me France, Over There, Oh! THE NO. 1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Head back down to Clarkson Farm with the latest bestseller from our favourite welly-wearing wannabe farmer, Jeremy Clarkson ___________ Enthusiastic trainee farmer Jeremy Clarkson made just £144 in his first year at Diddly Squat Farm. This year he's determined to do better. Not because he now knows what he's doing. But because he's fed up of getting stick from Kaleb. Yet farming continues to be a challenge. For instance . . . · Loading a grain trailer was more demanding than flying an Apache gunship? · Cows were more dangerous than motor-racing? · It's easier to get planning permission to build a nuclear plant than to turn a barn into a restaurant? Jeremy's always got a plan. Loads of them. Often cunning. Not always greeted with wild enthusiasm by Kaleb and Cheerful Charlie, however . . . ___________ PRAISE FOR DIDDLY SQUAT 'Clarkson has done more for farmers in one series than Countryfile achieved in 30 years' James Rebanks, author of A Shepherd's Life 'Clarkson has showcased the passion, humour and personalities of the people who work throughout the year to grow the nation's food . . . and brought an understanding of many of the issues faced by farmers to the British public' National Farmers Union 'A deserving Farming Champion of the Year' Farmers Weekly 'I don't know anything about farming. It's like David Attenborough doing jet-skiing, or Nicholas Witchell saying, "I'm going to be a cage fighter'" Jeremy Clarkson

The Bloomsbury Handbook To Toni Morrison written by Kelly Reames and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

The most substantial collection of critical essays on Morrison to appear since her death in mid-2019, this book contains previously unpublished essays which both acknowledge the universal significance of her writing even as they map new directions. Essayists include pre-eminent Morrison scholars, as well as scholars who work in cultural criticism, African American letters, American modernism, and women's writing. The book includes work on Morrison as a public intellectual; work which places Morrison's writing within today's currents of contemporary fiction; work which draws together Morrison's “trilogy” of Beloved, Jazz, and Paradise alongside Dos Passos' USA trilogy; work which links Morrison to such Black Atlantic artists as Lubaina Himid and others as well as work which offers a reading of “influence” that goes both directions between Morrison and Faulkner. Another cluster of essays treats seldom-discussed works by Morrison, including an essay on Morrison as writer of children's books and as speaker for children's education. In addition, a “Teaching Morrison” section is designed to help teachers and critics who teach Morrison in undergraduate classes. The Bloomsbury Handbook to Toni Morrison is wide-ranging, provocative, and satisfying; a fitting tribute to one of the greatest American novelists.

The seeds of irreverent humour that inspired the likes of Wayne and Shuster and Monty Python were sown in the trenches of the First World War, and The Dumbells—concert parties made up of fighting soldiers—were central to this process. Soldiers of Song tells their story. Lucky soldiers who could sing a song, perform a skit, or pass as a “lady,” were taken from the line and put onstage for the benefit of their soldier-audiences. The intent was to bolster morale and thereby help soldiers survive the war. The Dumbells’ popularity was not limited to troop shows along the trenches. The group also managed a run in London’s West End and became the first ever Canadian production to score a hit on Broadway. Touring Canada for some twelve years after the war, the Dumbells became a household name and made more than twenty-five audio recordings. If nationhood was won on the crest of Vimy Ridge, it was the Dumbells who provided the country with its earliest soundtrack. Pioneers of sketch comedy, the Dumbells are as important to the history of Canadian theatre as they are to the cultural history of early-twentieth-century Canada.
