Herzstück des medialen und gesellschaftlcihen Diskurses um heutige Mutterschaft ist die Vereinbarkeitsfrage von Erwerbstätigkeit und Fürsorgearbeit. Die Studie »Total Quality Mama. Mutterschaft aus der Perspektive Arbeit« wirft, über die medial behandelte Vereinbarkeits- und Machbarkeitsfrage hinaus, einen tiefenscharfen und kritischen Blick auf heutige Arbeits- und Selbstanforderungen von Müttern in den Bereichen Erwerbsarbeit, Familienarbeit, Partnerschaft sowie Ökonomisierung des Selbst. Eingebettet in Theoriekonzepte zur spätmodernen Arbeits- und Lebenswelt wurden sechs Fallbeispiele aus einem urbanen Umfeld ethnografisch untersucht und deren Empfindungen, Einstellungen und Praxen bezüglich Fürsorge, Erwerbstätigkeit und gleichberechtigter Arbeitsteilung erkundet. Einen intensiven Blick richtet die Studie auf die Verhandlung alter und neuer Rollenvorstellungen von Müttern und wie diese daran »arbeiten«, den Antagonismus von Erwerbstätigkeit und Fürsorgearbeit sowie Subjektivierungsanspruch und Aufopferung zu überwinden. Sie fragt nach den Ambivalenzen und dem Arrangement spätmoderner Mütter zwischen einem »freiwilligen« Zwang zur Erwerbstätigkeit, einem »freiwilligen« Zwang zur geschlechtlichen Gleichberechtigung und einer leistungsorientierten Fürsorge zu balancieren und wie dies mit »alten« Vorstellungen von Liebe und Fürsorge vereinbart wird. Hier zeigt sich: Mütterliche Fürsorgearbeit ist zunehmend wissensbasiert und professionalisiert und erfordert ein hohes Maß an Rationalisierungen – auch des Selbst. Ferner weisen diese Prozesse auch Analogien zu managerialen Führungsstrategien von Unternehmen – einem Total Quality Management – auf, und zeigen, dass die spätmoderne Mutter immer mehr zur Coachin oder Managerin ihrer Kinder und der Reproduktionssphäre wird. Dabei wird die Leistungsoptimierung und -maximierung des Selbst, der Fürsorge und der Familie zur verinnerlichten Lebensregel der Total Quality Mama.
