Jocelyne Cesari s’efforce de répondre à cette question en rappelant quels sont les fondements du culte et de la culture islamique, en évoquant les pratiques religieuses des musulmans en France et en traitant des rapports parfois difficiles qu’entretient la communauté musulmane avec la République. Les musulmans sont des hommes et des femmes aussi divers par leurs pratiques religieuses et leurs origines sociales ou ethniques que les autres croyants. Il faut, pour accepter cette évidence, que les esprits s’apaisent et que la peur disparaisse ; il faut surtout que nous cessions de les percevoir à travers notre ancienne histoire coloniale. Docteur en sciences politiques, spécialiste de l’islam en France et en Europe, Jocelyne Cesari travaille à l’institut de Recherche et d’Études sur le monde arabe et musulman (IREMAM-CNRS) et enseigne à l’institut d’Études politiques d’Aix-en-Provence. Elle a notamment publié « Être musulman en France ; associations, militants et mosquées » (éditions Karthala-IREMAM), un ouvrage remarqué sur les comportements des citoyens issus de l’immigration maghrébine.
