Sa valeur d'homme et de penseur s'impose. Les amiti's se nouent. Les 'tudiants, prompts juger un maitre, jorment autour de lui une client'le toute vibrante d'admiration et de sympathie. Car jamais, envers lui, ces deux sentiments ne nuisirent l'un l'autre. Sa voix, d'une belle sonorit', remplissait le grand amphith'tre de la Facult' des lettres et les couloirs voi sins. Jamais corps d'apparence plus robuste n' servit de support la vigueur de l'esprit. Tout en lui 'tait joree saine, expansive, rayonnante. Dans ses cours il n'abordait que les plus grands sujets et les plus dijjiciles, de m'me qu'il 'tudia toujours de pr'j'rence les plus grands auteurs, de m'me qu' son piano il n'aimait jouer que les ma]tres. Il allait d'instinct vers les sommets. Mais toute trace d'effort. Disparaissait dans l''lan de la d'monstration et l'harmonie du langage. Il n'y avait d'ejjort que pour celui qui 'cou tait, et encore 'tait-il rendu plus jacile par le don d'entrai nement que poss'dait le projesseur. L'avenir souriait; toutes les ambitions 'taient permises a notre ami, quoique rel'gu'es par lui au second plan de ses pr'occupations. Ce jul aussi pour lui le temps des longs espoirs intellectuels et des entreprises qui, toutes, ne devaient pas 'tre men'es ' terme. Il commena un cours de psycholofie qui en resta l'introduction, mais une introduction jorte et lumineuse que tous les bons 'l'ves de nos lyc'es continuent de lire. Meriter une attention partien liere, tant a cause des difficultes techniques qu'elles sou levent et que la critique n'est point parvenue, autant du moins qu'il nous semble, a resoudre entierement, qu'a cause des preuves tres decisives que, bien comprises et bien resolues, elles nous paraissent apporter a la these de la filiation cartesienne dela philosophie de Spinoza, si souvent contestee de nos jours. De ces deux questions la premiere est celle de la derivation des modes finis de la nature, en partant des attributs infinis de la substance; la seconde, celle des essences des choses, ou des essences formelles de ces memes modes finis, que Spinoza declare a la fois eternelles, immuables et fixes, en quoi il fait son ger a Platon, mais aussi particulieres, singulieres et meme individuelles, en quoi il ferait songer, a - t - on dit, toutes dif ferences gardees, plutot a Aristote, et en quoi memeil tomberait, par une repugnance excessive pour les idees generales et les universaux, dans un nominalisfne etrange, bien fait pour etonner chez ce grand dogmatique intellec tualiste. L'importance de ces deux problemes est conside rable dans la philosophie de Spinoza; car bien qu'on se soit avise fort justement que le titre de son grand ouvrage n'est pas trompeur et que l'objet principal, sinon unique.
