Qui ne voit que dans l'étude d'une langue dont il nous reste aussi peu de monuments que nous en avons de la langue grecque ou de la langue latine il est chimérique de prétendre à des résultats d'une exactitude mathématique, et qu'il faut se contenter d'une vraisemblance plus ou moins grande? Telle forme, telle construction, telle expression n'est pas dans Cicéron, c'est - à - dire dans les ouvrages de Cicéron qui nous sont parvenus qu'en peut-on conclure? Qui sait si elle ne se rencontrait pas précisément dans ceux que nous avons perdus? Et, à supposer que Cicéron ne l'ait pas employée cela ne peut - il pas ètre un pur effet du hasard?
