This book explores a shift in gender politics in Germany and Austria between 1870 and 1910 that was initiated by the struggle of middle-class women to gain access to higher education. Specifically, it investigates (pseudo) scientific, popular, and feminist discourses on the female body and sexuality in the context of public debates about medical education for women. The objective was to demonstrate how several female intellectuals attempted to negotiate new roles for women by responding directly to opponents of female education. Women's responses are important because, in addition to engaging in the negotiation of new gender roles, they document the emergence of a new female subjectivity. They also challenge the institutional, cultural, and social structures of the time. In addition, this book explores the role of medicine in creating gendered subjects and examines how popular concepts of gender differences influenced scientific investigation.

In this posthumous volume Jill Anne Kowalik analyzes pathological grief in 17th and 18th-century Germany. Early chapters outline the methodological prerequisites and the main theoretical underpinnings for her multidisciplinary study of mentality and give an overview of the theories and practices of consolation in the Western tradition. She traces the origins of pathological grief to the trauma of the Thirty Years War, and analyzes mourning practices as evidenced by funeral sermons for their punitive theological content. Rather than helping, these practices actually intensified the trauma of loss. The second part of the volume addresses the work of German writers such as Moritz, Nietzsche, Freud, and Goethe for their psychologically acute depiction of the effects of pathological mourning.

Die beiden einleitenden Kapitel erstellen durch einen knappen Überblick über die geschichtlichen Wandlungen des Idyllischen und Tragischen die historisch-poetologischen Voraussetzungen, um die spezifische Art ihrer Verschränkung im goetheschen Spätwerk prägnant hervortreten zu lassen. Dessen Analyse bildet den Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung, die, neben den lyrischen Einzelzyklen, den Modifikationen des Idyllischen und Tragischen in drei, jeweils eine Gattung repräsentierenden, Werken nachgeht: dem Roman «Die Wahlverwandtschaften», der Lyrik des «West-östlichen Divan» und der «Faust-II»-Tragödie. Dabei stehen «Divan» und «Faust» komplementär zueinander: Während jener als Idylle im Zentrum das Tragische birgt, ist es in der Faust-Tragödie die Idylle, die die Schnittstellen der dramatischen Struktur, Krisis und Verwandlung, markiert. «Die Wahlverwandtschaften» nehmen eine Sonderposition ein: in ihnen wird die Idylle, Arkadien, als immer wieder verfehlte Intention in ihrer Abwesenheit thematisch.

Den Katastrophen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts versuchen Elisabeth Langgässer und Hermann Broch in ihren Epochenanalysen Die Schlafwandler und Das unauslöschliche Siegel Sinn zu verleihen. Sie verbinden dafür kulturpessimistisches Gedankengut mit geschichtsphilosophischen Reflexionen und heilsgeschichtlichen Motiven zu neuen Deutungsmustern. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, die verschiedenen Sinnmuster zu rekonstruieren und die Textaussagen im Diskurs der Zeit zu verorten. Beide Romane werten die Moderne als Verfall und stilisieren ihre eigene Gegenwart zum geschichtlichen Wendepunkt mit endzeitlicher Qualität. In Brochs Text gerät dabei die Erfahrung von Gewalt zur Offenbarung eines kalten Gottes. Langgässer entwirft mit Hilfe von Zitaten aus dem Werk des Diktaturbefürworters Donoso Cortés eine Kritik am Nationalsozialismus und verstrickt sich aufgrund ihrer antiliberalen Position in Ambivalenzen gegenüber dem Nationalsozialismus.
