A defining moment in Catholic life in early modern Europe, Holy Week brought together the faithful to commemorate the passion, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this study of ritual and music, Robert L. Kendrick investigates the impact of the music used during the Paschal Triduum on European cultures during the mid-16th century, when devotional trends surrounding liturgical music were established; through the 17th century, which saw the diffusion of the repertory at the height of the Catholic Reformation; and finally into the early 18th century, when a change in aesthetics led to an eventual decline of its importance. By considering such issues as stylistic traditions, trends in scriptural exegesis, performance space, and customs of meditation and expression, Kendrick enables us to imagine the music in the places where it was performed.

Als "Zeitkunst" stellt sich für die Musik immer wieder die Frage, wie ihr Ende zu gestalten, wo nicht zu bewältigen ist. Der Band widmet sich musikalischer Schlussgestaltung als einem grundlegenden Problem kompositorischer Formgebung. Vielfältige Ansätze für diese kompositorische Auseinandersetzung, die im Laufe der europäischen Musikgeschichte entwickelt und reflektiert worden sind, bewegen sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Auflösung und Abreißen, Erfüllung und Verweigerung, triumphaler Apotheose und ersterbendem Verklingen. Die Probleme, um die es beim musikalischen Schließen geht, sind wiederum nicht allein formaler oder struktureller Provenienz, sondern auch ästhetischer Natur und werden oft erst in kulturgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen sichtbar. Von ihnen her kann der Schluss seine jeweilige besondere Bedeutung erhalten. Diese Probleme betreffen die Frage, welche expliziten oder impliziten Vorstellungen von 'Zeitlichkeit' und '(Un-)Endlichkeit', 'Spannung' und 'Auflösung' oder 'Bewältigung' und 'Resignation' sich in einem bestimmten historischen Kontext in die Schlussgestaltung einschreiben. Die einzelnen Beiträge des Bandes entwerfen systematische, historische und musiktheoretische Perspektiven auf das Problem des Schließens. Das untersuchte Feld erstreckt sich vom Mittelalter bis ins 20. Jahrhundert und enthält neben Beispielen, die in der Tradition europäischer Kunstmusik dem Werkbegriff zuzuordnen sind, auch Überlegungen zur Schlussgestaltung im Musiktheater und in der Jazz-Improvisation. Friedrich Spiro, nato da una famiglia ebraica berlinese nel 1863, fu musicista, critico musicale e filologo classico, allievo di Wilamowitz e Robert. Esperto di poesia ellenistica e metrica, si dedicò allo studio di Pausania, di cui produsse una nuova edizione critica per la Teubner. Dal 1891 si era trasferito a Roma, dove visse per un venticinquennio assieme alla moglie di dieci anni più giovane, la brillante violinista nata nell'impero russo e di formazione cosmopolita Assia Rombro: assieme a lei svolse ampia attività di critico musicale e di musicista, finché lo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale non li costrinse a tornare in Germania. Qui continuarono l'attività musicale, mentre Spiro insegnava al ginnasio. Lo stesso avvento del nazismo non li convinse subito ad emigrare: solo nel 1939 si stabiliranno in Svizzera, dove Friedrich morirà l'anno dopo, mentre Assia sopravvisse fino al 1956. In contatto, soprattutto negli anni romani, con grandi esponenti della cultura europea, Friedrich e Assia Spiro furono raffinati intellettuali, dotati di ricca sensibilità artistica. Friedrich, in particolare, mostrò presto insofferenza per la pura filologia, subendo la fascinazione di Nietzsche (di cui scrisse un importante necrologio) ed esponendo nei suoi scritti, sulla scia dei suoi maestri, il convincimento che la cultura europea dovesse richiamarsi alla grecità e alla grande arte per non cadere vittima della barbarie. Ripercorrere nel dettaglio le vicende, le relazioni e le idee dei coniugi Spiro, attraverso i loro scritti a stampa e le lettere scambiate con vari amici e colleghi (tra cui Johan Ludvig Heiberg e Otto Crusius), nonché attraverso le affermazioni talora cordiali e talora polemiche dei contemporanei (notevoli, in particolare, due curiosi mascheramenti satirici cui Spiro fu sottoposto prima in Germania da Ernst von Wolzogen e poi in Italia da Ettore Romagnoli) porta così a trattare delle contraddizioni della Kultur, e specialmente della crisi del modello di filologia storicista alla fine dell’800, ma più in generale del destino di una generazione di spiriti eletti la cui cultura si rivelò alfine impotente di fronte alle tragedie del XX secolo.
