Here are seven previously uncollected documents relating to the history of California, from its early days as a Mexican territory to the first fifty years of statehood as part of the United States. Jose del Carmen Lugo, a native-born Californio, tells of his life as a ranchero in San Bernardino and elsewhere, and the coming of the Norteamericanos in the 1840s. Benjamin Davis (Benito) Wilson recounts many of the same events from the perspective of an English-speaking settler who intermarried with one of the early land-owning Mexican families, and later supported the U.S. side during the Mexican-American War of 1845-48. Alexandre Holinski touts the virtues of frontier California and San Francisco during the Gold Rush days, as seen from a foreigner's unique perspective. Mark Lafayette Landrum, who settled in California during the early days of statehood, relates his rise to power as a local politician in Northern California. Amos Carpenter Rogers gives us an account of a rough voyage 'round the tip of South America to the Gold Rush fields. Alexander H. Todd and William T. Ballou provide further illumination with their brief accounts of life in early California and the Pacific Northwest. For the student of California history, these first-person narratives will open a window onto a period now long forgotten. Complete with Notes, Bibliography, and detailed Index. MICHAEL BURGESS is a Professor Emeritus at California State University, San Bernardino. MARY WICKIZER BURGESS was the co-publisher for many years of Borgo Press. Between them they have authored over 135 books."

In the 1960s and 1970s, an energetic new social movement emerged among Mexican Americans. Fighting for civil rights and celebrating a distinct ethnic identity, the Chicano Movement had a lasting impact on the United States, from desegregation to bilingual education. Rethinking the Chicano Movement provides an astute and accessible introduction to this vital grassroots movement. Bringing together different fields of research, this comprehensive yet concise narrative considers the Chicano Movement as a national, not just regional, phenomenon, and places it alongside the other important social movements of the era. Rodriguez details the many different facets of the Chicano movement, including college campuses, third-party politics, media, and art, and traces the development and impact of one of the most important post-WWII social movements in the United States.

In 1980, the celebrated new wave band Blondie headed to Los Angeles to record a new album and along with it, the cover song “The Tide Is High,” originally written by Jamaican legend John Holt. Featuring percussion by Peruvian drummer and veteran LA session musician “Alex” Acuña, and with horns and violins that were pure LA mariachi by way of Mexico, “The Tide Is High” demonstrates just one of the ways in which Los Angeles and the music of Latin America have been intertwined since the birth of the city in the eighteenth century. The Tide Was Always High gathers together essays, interviews, and analysis from leading academics, artists, journalists, and iconic Latin American musicians to explore the vibrant connections between Los Angeles and Latin America. Published in conjunction with the Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, the book shows how Latin American musicians and music have helped shape the city’s culture—from Hollywood film sets to recording studios, from vaudeville theaters to Sunset Strip nightclubs, and from Carmen Miranda to Pérez Prado and Juan García Esquivel.

Locally Played written by Benjamin Stokes and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-07 with Games & Activities categories.

How games can make a real-world difference in communities when city leaders tap into the power of play for local impact. In 2016, city officials were surprised when Pokémon GO brought millions of players out into the public space, blending digital participation with the physical. Yet for local control and empowerment, a new framework is needed to guide the power of mixed reality and pervasive play. In Locally Played, Benjamin Stokes describes the rise of games that can connect strangers across zip codes, support the “buy local” economy, and build cohesion in the fight for equity. With a mix of high- and low-tech games, Stokes shows, cities can tap into the power of play for the good of the group, including healthier neighborhoods and stronger communities. Stokes shows how impact is greatest when games “fit” to the local community—not just in terms of culture, but at the level of group identity and network structure. By pairing design principles with a range of empirical methods, Stokes investigates the impact of several games, including Macon Money, where an alternative currency encouraged people to cross lines of socioeconomic segregation in Macon, Georgia; Reality Ends Here, where teams in Los Angeles competed to tell multimedia stories around local mythology; and Pokémon GO, appropriated by several cities to serve local needs through local libraries and open street festivals. Locally Played provides game designers with a model to strengthen existing networks tied to place and gives city leaders tools to look past technology trends in order to make a difference in the real world.

Critical Animal And Media Studies written by Núria Almiron and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-14 with Social Science categories.

This book aims to put the speciesism debate and the treatment of non-human animals on the agenda of critical media studies and to put media studies on the agenda of animal ethics researchers. Contributors examine the convergence of media and animal ethics from theoretical, philosophical, discursive, social constructionist, and political economic perspectives. The book is divided into three sections: foundations, representation, and responsibility, outlining the different disciplinary approaches’ application to media studies and covering how non-human animals, and the relationship between humans and non-humans, are represented by the mass media, concluding with suggestions for how the media, as a major producer of cultural norms and values related to non-human animals and how we treat them, might improve such representations.
