Über die Gesinnungskontrolle der NSDAP-Kreisleitungen und ihrem Versuch, die »Volksgemeinschaft" herzustellen. Nach der Machtübernahme wuchsen in der NSDAP rasch Zweifel, ob sich die »Volksgenossen" aus Überzeugung, Indifferenz oder Opportunismus konform verhielten. Die Parteileitung formulierte daher Verhaltensanforderungen an die »arische" Bevölkerung, die sich auf immer größere Bereiche erstreckten - sowohl im Privat- als auch im Berufsleben. Mit der Umsetzung vor Ort waren die NSDAP-Kreisleitungen und ihre Funktionäre beauftragt, sie sollten die Einhaltung dieses dynamischen Normenkatalogs der »Volksgemeinschaft" kontrollieren und damit gewährleisten, dass nur ideologisch konforme »Volksgenossen" in staatlichen Institutionen Karriere machten, Sozialleistungen oder öffentliche Auszeichnungen erhielten. Die Autorin zeigt am Beispiel der Universitätsstadt Göttingen, wie die NSDAP anhand der Parteigutachten Personalpolitik und Amtspraxis von Universität und Stadtverwaltung beeinflusste, wobei auch alltägliche Beobachtungen der Funktionäre in die Bewertungen mit einflossen. Das steigende Ausmaß der Beurteilungen überforderte die lokalen Parteiapparate bald und führte zu einer Mischung aus Willkür und bürokratischem Schein, aus der die Gutachten schließlich ihre Wirkungsmacht bezogen.

When the Nazis seized power in Germany in 1933 they promised to create a new, harmonious society under the leadership of the Fuumlhrer, Adolf Hitler. The concept of Volksgemeinschaft - 'the people's community' - enshrined the Nazis' vision of society'; a society based on racist, social-Darwinist, anti-democratic, and nationalist thought. The regime used Volksgemeinschaft to define who belonged to the National Socialist 'community' and who did not. Being accorded the status of belonging granted citizenship rights, access to the benefits of the welfare state, and opportunities for advancement, while these who were denied the privilege of belonging lost their right to live. They were shamed, excluded, imprisoned, murdered. Volksgemeinschaft was the Nazis' project of social engineering, realized by state action, by administrative procedure, by party practice, by propaganda, and by individual initiative. Everyone deemed worthy of belonging was called to participate in its realization. Indeed, this collective notion was directed at the individual, and unleashed an enormous dynamism, which gave social change a particular direction. The Volksgemeinschaft concept was not strictly defined, which meant that it was rather marked by a plurality of meaning and emphasis which resulted in a range of readings in the Third Reich, drawing in people from many social and political backgrounds. Visions of Community in Nazi Germany scrutinizes Volksgemeinschaft as the Nazis' central vision of community. The contributors engage with individual appropriations, examine projects of social engineering, analyze the social dynamism unleashed, and show how deeply private lives were affected by this murderous vision of society.

The concept of "Volksgemeinschaft" has been the centre of productive debates among historians in recent years. Although not completely unchallenged, the concept is now widely accepted among scholars for offering new approaches for explaining and understanding National Socialism. So far untouched by the discussions is the question of what the concept of "Volksgemeinschaft" can contribute to teaching the Nazi past. This book combines historiographical and didactical articles, examining the potentials of "Volksgemeinschaft" as an analytical tool for teaching the history of the Nazi era and the Holocaust. Established in 1870 by Florenz Sartorius as a precision mechanical workshop, the Sartorius Group today is a leading partner for biopharmaceutical research and the industry. The roots of the company's two current divisions can be traced back to the firm's early years, specifically the founding of the membrane filter company (Membranfilter-Gesellschaft m.b.H) in 1927. For the first time, Manfred Grieger examines the activities Sartorius and its entrepreneurs engaged in during the Nazi era. He reveals the relationship between the company and the government, as well as the actions of the leading players of the family-run business during the Nazi regime.
