Die Neugr ndung der Universitat zu Koln und ihrer rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultat im Jahr 1919 ist eng mit Konrad Adenauer verbunden. In Nachbarschaft zur Bonner Universitat gelang es, eine zweite Hochschule in den preussischen Rheinlanden zu errichten. Man strebte u.a. mit einer Aufteilung zwischen Forschungsaufgaben (Instituten) und Unterrichtsaufgaben (Seminaren) einen neuen Hochschultyp an. Zugleich legte man grossen Wert auf weltanschauliche und wissenschaftsmethodische Pluralitat. F\r die Entwicklung der Fakultat war es wichtig, dass es gelang, bedeutende Professoren wie z. B. Fritz Stier-Somlo, Godehard Josef Ebers, Heinrich Lehmann, Hans Planitz, Andreas von Tuhr und Arthur Baumgarten zu gewinnen. Nach kurzer Bl\te stand die Fakultat allerdings als Folge des Nationalsozialismus am Rand des Abgrunds: Das Aufeinandertreffen der Fakultatskollegen Hans Kelsen und Carl Schmitt 1932/33 stellte sich als Fanal dar. In der Folge wurden die Professoren Godehard Josef Ebers, Walter Goldschmidt, Franz Haymann, Hans Kelsen, Ludwig Waldecker und Alfred Wieruszowski aus der Fakultat vertrieben. 1945 musste Konrad Adenauer erneut helfend bei der Wiedereroffnung der Universitat eingreifen. Nach der "Entnazifizierung" gelang es, die Universitat und mit ihr die Fakultat neu aufzubauen. Tatkraftig konnten Juristen wie Hans Carl Nipperdey, Hermann Jahrreiss, Gerhard Kegel und Bernhard Rehfeld die Facherstruktur der Fakultat erneuern. Gl\ckliche Berufungen von Wissenschaftlern, u.a. Ernst von Hippel, Hans Peters, Ottmar B\hler und Alex Meyer, machten es moglich, dass bis zum Jahre 1950 erneut eine angesehene Fakultat entstand. Zu den Mitgliedern der Fakultat gehorten auch die spateren Bundesprasidenten Gustav Heinemann und Karl Carstens.

Zu den ersten Bonner Medizinstudentinnen gehörten viele Töchter bildungsorientierter jüdischer Familien. Die späteren Promovendinnen mit Bestnoten ebneten, ohne selbst weibliche Berufsvorbilder gehabt zu haben, folgenden Generationen von Studentinnen den akademischen Weg. Ungeachtet früher Berufserfolge hatten etliche dieser Ärztinnen nach Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges unter erheblichen Vorbehalten der Kollegenschaft sowie Benachteiligungen bei Einstellungen zu leiden. Ab 1933 begann die anfängliche Ausgrenzung und spätere Verfolgung durch die Nationalsozialisten. Nicht allen gelang die Flucht ins Ausland. Manche schafften dort jedoch einen erfolgreichen Neuanfang. Nach der Flucht aus Nazideutschland praktizierten ehemalige Bonner jüdische Studentinnen als Ärztinnen in acht verschiedenen Ländern, darunter Bulgarien, Chile, Palästina und die Türkei. Das ihnen angetane Unrecht haben sie nie vergessen können. Many of the first medical female students at Bonn University came from well-educated Jewish families. Without having had any kind of female example for themselves, most of them finished their studies with best exam results and, in some way, became the lead generation on the academic pathway for those female student generations to come. Despite early success in the job, after the end of World War I, a considerable number of these early medical female doctors were faced with reservation from their male colleagues and with discrimination during employment requests. Early 1933 they were excluded from certain medical doctor positions which later terminated in persecution by the Nazi regime. Not all managed to leave Germany in time; some of them successfully started a new career abroad. None of them ever forgot the injustice which they had suffered.

Barta beschreibt Kindheit und Schulzeit in Spitz an der Donau (wo alte Leute dem Pfarrer die Hand küssen) und Krems (wo es Gymnasiasten aus moralischen Gründen verboten ist, Operetten zu besuchen). Er berichtet über sein Studium in Wien; erste Unterrichtsjahre im damals noch mehrheitlich deutschsprachigem Iglau (Jihlava); über seine Einberufung zum "Volkssturm" bis hin zu seiner Zeit als Leiter der Volkshochschule Raabs an der Thaya. Die Memoiren, herausgegeben von seinem Enkelsohn a.o. Univ. Prof. Dr. Manfred Draudt, sind durch zahlreiche Dokumente und Fotografien, die weit ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückreichen, anschaulich illustriert.
