Education is a main issue in all countries. Policy makers, educators, families, students and, in a more general way, societies expect schools to provide a high quality education. As senior researchers in education, we address some of the most complex and demanding research questions: How does learning affect identity? One fifth of the population of the United States belongs to the immigrant or second generations. While the US is generally thought of as the immigrant society par excellence, it now has a number of rivals in Europe. The Next Generation brings together studies from top immigration scholars to explore how the integration of immigrants affects the generations that come after. The original essays explore the early beginnings of the second generation in the United States and Western Europe, exploring the overall patterns of success of the second generation. While there are many striking similarities in the situations of the children of labor immigrants coming from outside the highly developed worlds of Europe and North America, wherever one looks, subtle features of national and local contexts interact with characteristics of the immigrant groups themselves to create variations in second-generation trajectories. In present-day pluralistic and individualized societies, the question of how individuals appropriate religious traditions has become particularly relevant. In this volume, psychologists, anthropologists, and historians examine the presence of religious voices in narrative constructions of the self. The focus is on the multiple ways religious stories and practices feature in self-narratives about major life transitions. The contributions explore the ways in which such voices inform the accommodation and interpretation of these transitions. In addition to being inspired by Dan McAdams’ approach to life stories as ‘personal myths’ that inform us about the quests of individuals for a satisfactory balance between agency and communion, most of the contributors have found the theory of ‘the dialogical self’ developed by Hubert Hermans particularly useful. Thus the contributions explore the ways in which identity formation is shaped by internal dialogues between personal and collective voices in the context of the specific constellations of power in which these voices are embedded. The volume is divided into three parts addressing theoretical and methodological considerations, religious resources in narratives on life transitions, and religious positioning in diaspora.

Een groot deel van de Europese Roma en Sinti leidt een marginaal bestaan. De meesten hebben zo weinig scholing dat ze weinig perspectief hebben op een betere toekomst. Zij hebben nauwelijks geprofiteerd van de verbeterde toegang tot het onderwijs voor mensen uit de lagere sociaaleconomische klassen vanaf 1950. Hoe kan het dat het in de afgelopen zeventig jaar slechts zo weinig Roma en Sinti gelukt is om door te stromen naar het hoger onderwijs? Voor Wegbereiders interviewde Anita van der Hulst meer dan vijftig Roma en Sinti in Nederland en Tsjechië. Zij vertellen openhartig over hun ervaringen, in het leven in het algemeen en in het onderwijs in het bijzonder. Nederland en Tsjechië zijn landen met een sterk verschillende naoorlogse geschiedenis. Een vergelijking tussen die twee landen maakt inzichtelijk welke drempels Roma en Sinti moeten overwinnen om kans te maken op stijging op de sociale ladder.
