Dans ces deux premiers volumes, il tente de mettre ce plan à exécution sans scrupules et entame une liaison passionnée avec une jeune Allemande, au cours de laquelle ils découvrent et expérimentent tous les deux aspects cachés de leurs sexualités. La première marche vers une meilleure vie semble être franchie, mais deux autres femmes apparaissent soudainement. Cela rend les choses plus difficiles que prévu et bien des surprises attendent Johnny et le lecteur lorsqu'il doit choisir entre trois femmes à la fin. Le roman traite les différents aspects culturels des relations afro-européennes comme aucun autre auparavant, en s'appuyant également sur des clichés bien connus. Il montre pourquoi ces relations sont belles, passionnées, contagieuses, aimantes et paradisiaques, mais aussi où elles atteignent leurs limites. Le désir sexuel intense, la sensualité, la soif du corps y jouent un rôle aussi central que l'amour. Pour une première fois, de telles scènes sont décrites très près de la réalité dans ce livre et rendent ce roman plus authentique.
