Support biodiversity with this practical guide to creating habitat gardens for native pollinators in Southern Ontario. Saving the bees is an environmental cause that resonates deeply with Canadians. While much of the popular focus is on honeybees, an introduced species, many people are largely unaware of the importance of native bees. These pollinators are of crucial importance and are threatened by climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, and disease and competition from non-native species and modern intensive agriculture. A Garden for the Rusty-Patched Bumblebee provides all the information needed for gardeners to take action to support and protect pollinators—by creating habitat in yards and communal spaces, and on balconies and rooftops. There are approximately 400 species of native bees in Ontario, including bumblebees, sweat bees, mining bees, cuckoo bees, leafcutter bees and cellophane bees. This book introduces and deepens the concept of pollinator gardening—creating gardens that help bees thrive—by exploring specialist relationships. For example, the native-to-Ontario sweat bee Lasioglossum oenotherae specializes in pollen from the native evening primrose plant. With plant recommendations specific to Southern Ontario, as well as useful garden designs and numerous tips for success, this compact, full-colour guide will enable gardeners to discover the crucial connections between native plants and native pollinators—and learn how to cultivate their own patch of pollinator paradise.

Easy Care Native Plants written by Patricia A. Taylor and has been published by Henry Holt and Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-12-15 with Gardening categories.

North America's magnificent plant life has a peculiar history in that it is generally regarded as weedy material in its native meadows and woodlands and viewed as a horticultural treasure trove abroad. In Easy Care Native Plants, Patricia A. Taylor seeks to change this situation by emphasizing the elegant beauty, rather than the common naturalness, of American flora and by urging gardeners to capture the exquisite essence of its blossoms and foliage in artistic compositions. The book is divided into three sections, each filled with color photographs and containing special lists of plant recommendations from horticultural experits in the United States, Canada, and Europe. These suggestions include natives for city patios and decks, shrubs for winter interest, colorful flowers for drought situations, and prairie plants for a formal front yard display. The first section reviews the history and current use of native American plants and includes a brief primer on garden design. The second presents profiles of eighteen public and private gardens in Canada and the United States and highlights the crucial role of horticultural organizations and garden clubs in spreading the good news about native flora. The last section is devoted to detailed descriptions of over 500 plants, chosen not only for their handsone appearance but also for their ability to flourish without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. With them, gardeners everywhere will have yearlong beauty requiring minimal maintenance. While many of the plants cited in the book are little known, all are commercially propagated and available. The Appendix lists sources for each plant category and describes a select number of mail-order firms, including ordering information. Easy Care Native Plants has been written and designed to be a usable, definitive resource for the full specturm of those who love and appreciate beautiful plants, from weekend gardeners to landscape designers and architects.

Grow Wild Native Plant Gardening In Canada And Northern United States written by Lorraine Johnson and has been published by Random House Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Native plant gardening categories.

Newcomers to the garden will likely be drawn by the title, but this whirlwind sampling of native plants, gardens and techniques doesn't deliver on its promises. Despite her admission that "one book can never do justice to the unimaginably complex variations at work in any one region," Johnson (Green Future) seems to attempt just that. The country's regions are covered in three chapters encompassing extended areas of the Northwest, the Prairies and the Northeast. Included are discussions of local conservation efforts; lists of native plants suitable to the region and, importantly, invasive exotics; and abbreviated visits with local gardeners. Profiles of specific gardens are interspersed among the plant lists but do not expand on the lists by demonstrating how the plants can be grown and used. A Pennsylvania gardener with two acres of moss for a lawn boasts "no weeding, no watering," but his stance is somewhat misleading, for only certain Northeast locales could successfully support this particular approach. The final chapter, "The Nuts and Bolts," presenting tips, techniques and sources for planning and planting a native-plant garden, is an overview. Like the volume as a whole, it is best used as a starting point for the rigorous effort of establishing the care-free native-plant garden.
