Of the many brass bands that have flourished in Britain and Ireland over the last 200 years very few have documented records covering their history. This directory is an attempt to collect together information about such bands and make it available to all. Over 19,600 bands are recorded here, with some 10,600 additional cross references for alternative or previous names. This volume supersedes the earlier “British Brass Bands – a Historical Directory” (2016) and includes some 1,400 bands from the island of Ireland. A separate work is in preparation covering brass bands beyond the British Isles. A separate appendix lists the brass bands in each county

Otto Treumann (1919-2001) is a major pioneer in the modernization of graphic design in the Netherlands. Inspired by Swiss typography and Bauhaus aesthetics, Treumann's oeuvre combines easy-to-read visual elements with iconoclastic color treatment, enhanced by his wide knowledge of printing techniques acquired during the Second World War when he forged documents for the resistance. Treumann enjoyed a special relationship with industrial clients, devising house styles and logos for the publishing house Wolters Noordhoff, the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects and El Al Airlines; he also designed posters for the Industries Fair in Utrecht, the Rotterdam Ahoy and Tattoo in Delft. Based on materials from the Otto Treumann Archive at the Stedelijk Museum, and designed by Irma Boom, this volume surveys Treumann's career.

I. In some periods of the past Netherlands medicine has played a major role in the evolution of European medicine; today its history still enjoys much in terest even at the other side of the Ocean. In this bibliography it has been my endeavour to compile references for all that has been written on the history of Dutch medicine in our country and elsewhere in our age. The main concern of this work is with the medicine of the Northern Nether lands. However, before the end of the sixteenth century the Northern and South ern Netherlands were not yet divided into two separate countries; they were still politically one and for the greater part spoke the same Flemish language. So be fore their separation the present-day Belgium and Netherlands also had a com mon medical history. Therefore many entries have been included which bear on early (and sometimes later) Flemish medicine, but it has not been the inten tion to strive for completeness in this respect.

The fifth book in the Basics Design Series, Colour by Gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris examines in detail two distinct areas of colour usage in design. Firstly the book explores in depth what colours mean, their inherent associations and their cultural connotations. Building on this information the book then tackles how to control colour in a design in order to achieve a desired effect or fulfill a specific brief. Starting with the basic principles of colour how light works, colour wheels, colour combinations and harmonies the book builds on these principles and explains how the designer, or design student, can accurately and intentionally control colour. Examples from contemporary designers that push the envelope of colour in design are used to bring the principles under discussion alive. These examples demonstrate how the many substrates and printing techniques, including coloured paper stocks and unusual and innovative ink combinations, can dramatically alter the impact of a design.

Much modern (Le. post-17S0) economic history is concerned with success in that a vast body of literature focuses its attention upon the experience of industrialisation and economic growth or upon relative differences in performance once the growth process is underway. The explanations advanced frequently hinge on those supply and demand factors, perceptible during the growth period itself, which may have helped or hindered economic progress. The problem which arises with this approach is whether those forces attributed with having pulled a country forward were the same as those which, in their absence, had held it back. For example, the growth of'inter national demand may be seen as a major stimulus in the economic development of a particular country, but its effectiveness as a stimu lant may have been contingent upon the prior removal of quite diffe rent obstacles to growth. In these circumstances it would be quite wrong to attribute lack of earlier development to the absence of international demand. Thus the study of a period preceeding discer nible growth in a sector of the economy may tell historians as much about the reasons for subsequent growth as a study of the growth period itself. This was my initial reason for choosing to research into the industrial development in the Netherlands in the first half of the nineteenth century: that it was an interval in economic history usually interpreted as one of stagnation, of missed opportunities and even of economic decline.

In the years before the Second World War agriculture in most European states was carried out on peasant or small family farms using technologies that relied mainly on organic inputs and local knowledge and skills, supplying products into a market that was partly local or national, partly international. The war applied a profound shock to this system. In some countries farms became battlefields, causing the extensive destruction of buildings, crops and livestock. In others, farmers had to respond to calls from the state for increased production to cope with the effects of wartime disruption of international trade. By the end of the war food was rationed when it was obtainable at all. Only fifteen years later the erstwhile enemies were planning ways of bringing about a single agricultural market across much of continental western Europe, as farmers mechanised, motorized, shed labour, invested capital, and adopted new technologies to increase output. This volume brings together scholars working on this period of dramatic technical, commercial and political change in agriculture, from the end of the Second World War to the emergence of the Common Agricultural Policy in the early 1960s. Their work is structured around four themes: the changes in the international political order within which agriculture operated; the emergence of a range of different market regulation schemes that preceded the CAP; changes in technology and the extent to which they were promoted by state policy; and the impact of these political and technical changes on rural societies in western Europe.
