Despite opposition on several fronts, women were admitted to the University of Georgia for the first time in 1918. The new division of home economics, established within the college of agriculture, provided female students with the opportunity for higher education, something many had sought previously out of state. Their dedication laid the foundation for a century of growth and development in a university program known for its commitment to advancing individual well-being, families, and communities through the generations and the dissemination of knowledge, the education of professionals, and the creation of research-based programs. Over the decades, the number of departments and the variety of degree programs have grown, providing students with an array of career paths. Funded research projects support a multitude of state, national, and worldwide initiatives. International study programs and interdisciplinary relationships with other UGA colleges expand the learning environment and complement the core curriculum. 100 Years Enriching Lives: Family and Consumer Sciences at UGA celebrates this rich and unique history through black-and-white and color photographs, personal journeys, and timeline facts. The 140-page pictorial history chronicles the development of the FACS department from the founding of the division of home economics in the aftermath of World War I through the present day.

Insurance is one of Hong Kong's oldest industries. In the nineteenth century the lucrative trade between China and Europe carried many risks - piracy, warfare, fire, loss of goods, and other mishaps. Dozens of different insurance firms - some home-grown, others imported - established themselves in the colony to protect ships and their cargoes. With the diversification of Hong Kong's economy into manufacturing and services, Hong Kong became a global centre of insurance, and the industry continues to transform itself today through changing practices and new lines of business. This is the first comprehensive history of Hong Kong's insurance industry, and it argues its central importance in the economy. Typhoons, shipwrecks, fires, wars, political turbulence and unexpected events of all kinds provide a dramatic background to a fascinating survey; the book is richly illustrated with photographs and documents. Ngaw Mee Kauis a former vice president of Lingnan University, Hong Kong.Feng Bangyanis professor of the College of Economics, Jinan University. "The book will help students better understand the development of the industry and the important role it plays in Hong Kong, as well as building up their knowledge and sense of belonging in the industry. It will be of interest to people from the field of insurance and finance, people who are interested in Hong Kong history, as well as the general public." -- Chan Kin-por, chief executive, Hong Kong office, Munich Re

100 Years Of Ncvo And Voluntary Action written by Justin Davis Smith and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-14 with History categories.

This book explores the rich history of voluntary action in the United Kingdom over the past 100 years, through the lens of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), which celebrates its centenary in 2019. From its establishment at the end of the First World War, through the creation of the Welfare State in the middle of the twentieth century, to New Labour and the Big Society at the beginning of this century, NCVO has been at the forefront of major developments within society and the voluntary movement. The book examines its many successes, including its role in establishing high-profile charities such as Age Concern, the Youth Hostels Association, and National Association of Citizens’ Advice Bureaux. It charts the development of closer relations with the state, resulting in growing awareness of the value of voluntary action, increased funding, and beneficial changes to public policy, tax and charity law. But it also explores the criticisms NCVO has faced, in particular that by pursuing a partnership agenda and championing professionalisation, it has contributed to an erosion of the movement’s independence and distinctiveness.
