From Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen's search for new kinds of radiation resulted the discovery of the natural radioactivity of uranium by Antoine Henry Becquerel in 1896. This event opened a new era of science that can be considered as the beginning of nuclear sciences. The findings of Pierre and Marie Curie of radium and polonium as useful radiation source subsequently opened the way to the first applications of radiation in medicine. Over the decades and still today radiation has found broad applications in many fields of science and technology. Not only chemistry, physics, biochemistry and medicine are using relevant applications of radioactivity. Biochemistry, agriculture, cosmo- and geochemistry, archaeology, geology also are fields where radiochemistry still is gaining importance. This book gives a survey about the history and modern aspects of radioactivity, new synthetic elements, and applications of radioactivity.

' Half Lives shines a light on the shocking history of the world's toxic love affair with a deadly substance, radium. Unnerving, fascinating, informative and truly frightening.' Hallie Rubenhold, author of The Five 'The story of this supposed cure-all in everyday 20th century life is fascinating and well told.' Brian Maye, Irish Times Lucy Jane Santos presents the surprising history of radium in everyday life. Of all the radioactive elements discovered at the end of the 19th century, it was radium that became the focus of both public fascination and entrepreneurial zeal. Half Lives tells the fascinating, curious, sometimes macabre story of the element through its ascendance as a desirable item - a present for a queen, a prize in a treasure hunt, a glow-in- the-dark dance costume - to its role as a supposed cure-all in everyday 20th-century life, when medical practitioners and business people (reputable and otherwise) devised ingenious ways of commodifying the new wonder element, and enthusiastic customers welcomed their radioactive wares into their homes. Historian Lucy Jane Santos - herself the proud owner of a formidable collection of radium beauty treatments - delves into the stories of these products and details the gradual downfall and discredit of the radium industry through the eyes of the people who bought, sold and eventually came to fear the once-fetishized substance. She reveals a new history of radium, one in which the stories of those previously dismissed as quacks and fools are brought to life, as part of a unique examination of the interplay between science and popular culture.

Emma Watson’s Our Shared Shelf book club choice New York Times bestseller ‘Fascinating.’ Sunday Times ‘Thrilling.’ ????? Mail on Sunday All they wanted was the chance to shine. Be careful what you wish for… ‘The first thing we asked was, “Does this stuff hurt you?” And they said, “No.” The company said that it wasn’t dangerous, that we didn’t need to be afraid.’ As the First World War spread across the world, young American women flocked to work in factories, painting clocks, watches and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous – the girls shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in dust from the paint. However, as the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses. It turned out that the very thing that had made them feel alive – their work – was slowly killing them: the radium paint was poisonous. Their employers denied all responsibility, but these courageous women – in the face of unimaginable suffering – refused to accept their fate quietly, and instead became determined to fight for justice. Drawing on previously unpublished diaries, letters and interviews, The Radium Girls is an intimate narrative of an unforgettable true story. It is the powerful tale of a group of ordinary women from the Roaring Twenties, who themselves learned how to roar. Further praise for The Radium Girls 'The importance of the brave and blighted dial-painters cannot be overstated.’ Sunday Times ‘A perfect blend of the historical, the scientific and the personal.' Bustle ‘Thrilling and carefully crafted.’ Mail on Sunday?
