There are hundreds of travel guides that tell you all the good things about a place and gloss over the not-so-good. This guide acts as an antidote to that and tells you what you really want to know. What are the chances of leaving the place alive? Will the food or water kill you? How friendly or violent are the locals? Most of the time you don't get to know this until you are actually there - but by then it is too late. 101 Places Not to Visit takes you through a selection of cities and countries that any wise traveller should avoid. Its tongue-in-cheek, laugh-out-loud humour outlines the not-so-attractive elements of each place. A star rating of Boredom, Likelihood of Fatal Visit, Friendliness of People, and Ease of Travelling is included at the start of each entry to give the reader a taster. This is followed by an outline of the history of the place, its culture (or lack of it), and what culinary delights you can hope to endure. Arranged by continent, the spreads are alphabetical and concentrate on cities. Each city's History, Climate, Visas etc. is discussed. There are also special spreads devoted to whole countries.

“Critical pedagogy is not a set of ideas, but a way of ‘doing’ learning and teaching” (Canagarajah, 2005). This definition puts CP squarely in the classroom and leads us to view how teachers interact with students and how students treat one another, while negotiating institutional and societal expectations. The chapters in the book use a variety of methods to address questions of power within educational institutions, from classrooms to the ministries of education. All the contributors are, or have been, teachers in the Middle East, from Egypt to Iran. Their nationalities range from Egyptian, to American, Canadian, British, Tunisian and Iranian. Ten of the contributors are women. All have conducted research and/or invited participation from among students and fellow teachers to explore issues of Critical Pedagogy from various perspectives. The question of physical space relates to power but is also related to linguistic space; student choice is not only related to linguistic space but also to motivation and thus empowerment. Changing teachers’ beliefs leads to empowerment for teachers, but also empowerment for students. Educational policy that recognizes social and personal identity reflects back to personal motivation. These studies meet and mesh, complement and sometimes take different viewpoints. However, all the studies embrace the concept that we must respect and nurture the human in our students, that we as teachers are the front line as enablers of our students’ empowerment. If we do not provide the space, and honor their dignity, our students cannot claim and embrace their power. Canagarajah, S. (2005). Critical Pedagogy in L2 Learning and Teaching. In E. Hinkel (Ed.), Handbook of Research in Second Language Teaching and Learning (pp. 931-949). Mahwah, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates.

San Francisco: the home of hills and valleys, of dreamers and trailblazers, of hippies and hipsters. From the gold rush to the Golden Gate, the City by the Bay has always basked in the glow of its colorful and celebrated history and world-renowned landmarks. But for those who live and love on this compact seven-mile by seven-mile metropolis, San Francisco is a treasure trove of unusual neighborhood sights and places that sparkle with the allure of hidden pleasures and local lore. Discover a stairway that transports you from the depths of the ocean to the heights of outer space; take a spin class amidst the grand elegance of a repurposed 1920s movie palace; or slide down a century-old sundial that sits at the center of what was once California's first racetrack for cars. This is the real San Francisco. Strung together, the 111 experiences gathered here tell the B-side story of the city once romantically known as the Paris of the West.
