Because of the severe downturn in the travel industry after the tragic events of 9/11, Alex Livingston is transferred from his dream job in a luxurious Honolulu hotel to his company's downtown business property in Brooklyn, where he must face the family he ran away from years earlier and a city still reeling from the horrific attack. While adjusting to life in Brooklyn, Alex discovers that it's denizens are not just trying to make sense of a world gone mad, but dealing with day to day issues in their multicultural neighborhood in Boerum Hill. Alex befriends a firefighter, Ryan Callahan, who is haunted by his role in the events of 9/11. Through Ryan and his firehouse comrades, Alex comes to terms with the bizarre turns his life has taken and has new hope for the future.

"Investigating Iwo encourages us to explore the connection between American visual culture and World War II, particularly how the image inspired Marines, servicemembers, and civilians to carry on with the war and to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure victory over the Axis Powers. Chapters shed light on the processes through which history becomes memory and gains meaning over time. The contributors ask only that we be willing to take a closer look, to remain open to new perspectives that can deepen our understanding of familiar topics related to the flag raising, including Rosenthal's famous picture, that continue to mean so much to us today"--

The tragic true story of Japan's Crown Princess-with a new afterword by the author. It's the fantasy of many young women: marry a handsome prince, move into a luxurious palace, and live happily ever after. But that's not how it turned out for Masako Owada. Ben Hills's fascinating portrait of Princess Masako and the Chrysanthemum Throne draws on research in Tokyo and rural Japan, at Oxford and Harvard, and from more than sixty interviews with Japanese, American, British, and Australian sources-many of whom have never spoken publicly before-shedding light on the royal family's darkest secrets, secrets that can never be openly discussed in Japan because of the reverence in which the emperor and his family are held. But most of all, this is a story about a love affair that went tragically wrong. The paperback edition will contain a new afterword by the author, discussing the impact this book had in Japan, where it was banned.
