This edited volume is a sequel to, and a development of, The Long Aftermath: Cultural Legacies of Europe at War, 1936-2016 (2016). It focuses on the six major European countries and states that remained officially neutral throughout the Second World War, namely Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Vatican. Its transnational, comparative and interdisciplinary approach addresses complex questions pertaining to collective remembrance, national policies and politics, and intellectual as well as cultural responses to neutrality during and after the conflict. The contributions are from a broad range of scholars working across the disciplines of history, literature, film, media, and cultural studies. The book investigates and compares the role of artistic and academic refugees from National Socialism acting as "cultural mediators" or "agents of knowledge" between their origin and host societies. By doing so, it locates itself at the intersection of the recently emerging field of the history of knowledge, transnational history, migration, exile, as well as cultural transfer studies. The case studies provided in this volume are of global scope, focusing on routes of escape and migration to Iceland, Italy, the Near East, Portugal and Shanghai, and South-, Central-, and North America. The chapters examine the hybrid ways refugees envisaged, managed, organized, and subsequently mediated their migrations. It focuses on how they dealt with their escape in their art and science. The chapters ask how the emigrants located themselves––did they associate with ethnic, religious, and/or cultural affiliations, specific social classes, or specific parts of society—and how such identifications were portrayed in their knowledge transfer and cultural translations. This book examines how left-wing political and cultural movements in Western Europe have considered Jews in the last two hundred years. The chapters seek to answer the following question: has there been a specific way in which the Left has considered Jewish minorities? La razzia del 16 ottobre 1943 rappresenta - non solo in riferimento alla Shoah - una delle pagine più dolorose, forse la più dolorosa della storia di Roma nel XX secolo. Un avvenimento svoltosi non solo sotto le finestre del papa, ma anche nelle strade e nei palazzi di tutta la città, e che ha coinvolto, oltre la Comunità ebraica, la gran parte degli abitanti. Un avvenimento così traumatico da lasciare tracce profonde. Già dalla liberazione di Roma, infatti, si scatenarono polemiche sul ruolo del Vaticano, dei dirigenti della Comunità ebraica, della polizia italiana e della società italiana in generale di fronte all'accaduto e alla Shoah. L'enormità dell'avvenimento, la tragicità delle sue conseguenze hanno quindi perseguitato la coscienza e la memoria collettiva della città fino ai nostri giorni.
