La guerre de 1870 est une guerre oubliée. La défaite française, le traité de Francfort et la perte de l'Alsace-Lorraine ont perdu leur place dans l'historiographie, la culture scolaire et le souvenir des Français. L'engouement pour la Commune de Paris a même, sans doute, joué un rôle important dans le rejet au second plan du conflit de 1870, souvent perçu, à tort, comme un simple prélude à l'insurrection communaliste. Pourtant, à bien des égards, la guerre de 1870 mérite une lecture nouvelle et attentive, une étude qui soit moins celle de la guerre elle-même, avec ses péripéties militaires, politiques ou diplomatiques, que celle des Français pendant le conflit : leur vie matérielle, leurs attitudes politiques, leur perception de l'événement, leur univers mental. Car "le temps court" de ces six mois de guerre est une véritable épreuve de vérité. Le sentiment national existe ; il est certes fragile, diffus, mais la guerre permet de mesurer sa progression. Un demi-siècle avant l'effroyable test de cohésion sociale et culturelle que représentera le premier conflit mondial, la guerre de 1870 montre que le socle de la Résistance française de 1914-1918 était, en partie, constitué. Le conflit et le souvenir auront contribué, de manière décisive, à forger le sentiment d'appartenance des Français à la patrie commune. En ce sens, la guerre constitua une étape importante dans un mouvement séculaire, celui de l'achèvement de la nation.
