From the cramped quarters of New York City in 1922, childcare pioneers Ettie and Henry Schacht looked to the expansive woodlands of Connecticut for their school and found a perfect location in the town of Quaker Hill. Slovenská spoločnosť a kultúrna obec si po vzniku prvej Československej republiky uvedomovala národno-buditeľský, historický, osvetový a výchovno-vzdelávací význam tradičného ľudového umenia a najmä divadelného ochotníctva na Slovensku. Po národnom oslobodení aj z dôvodu nebývalého nárastu počtu ochotníckych súborov v poprevratovom období sa do popredia opätovne dostala otázka ich organizačného združenia, materiálneho zabezpečenia a metodického vedenia. Oživotvorená Matica slovenská, ako celonárodný kultúrny líder na Slovensku, v tejto oblasti od roku 1919 nadviazal na predchádzajúce snahy ochotníctva na Slovensku a predovšetkým Slovenského spevokolu v Turčianskom Sv. Martine. V krátkom čase agilný tajomník Matice slovenskej Štefan Krčméry a jeden z jej správcov Jaroslav Vlček pozvali do Turčianskeho Sv. Martina za účelom príprav založenia novej divadelnej ústrednej organizácie, spisovateľa, dramatika, etnografa, múzejníka, známeho fotografa a kultúrneho dejateľa Pavla Socháňa. Z iniciatívy a pod patronátom Matice slovenskej sa zakladajúce valné zhromaždenie Ústredia slovenských ochotníckych divadiel (ÚSOD) konalo 25. júna 1922 v Turčianskom Sv. Martine. Vzniklo a fungovalo pod protektorátom Matice slovenskej, pričom organizačne kopírovalo spolkovú formu Slovenského spevokolu. Jeho prvým predsedom sa stal predseda Slovenského spevokolu, martinský kníhkupec a vydavateľ Jozef Gašparík-Leštinský, prvým podpredsedom Pavol Socháň a druhým podpredsedom Štefan Krčméry, tajomníkom martinský notár Pavol Bartoš, pokladníkom matičný pokladník Pavol Štarke a režisérom člen a režisér Slovenského spevokolu Rudolf Slezák. Cieľom ÚSOD-u bolo pôsobiť ako organizačné, od roku 1932 aj metodické centrum slúžiace na aktivizáciu, všestranné povznesenie, rozšírenie a skvalitnenie činnosti slovenského ochotníctva.
