Before the Portuguese Royal Court moved to its South-American colony in 1808, books and periodicals had a very limited circulation there. It was only when Brazilian ports were opened to foreign trade that the book trade began to flourish, and printed matter became more easily available to readers, whether for pleasure, for instruction or for political reasons. This book brings together a collection of original articles on the transnational relations between Brazil and Europe, especially England and France, in the domain of literature and print culture from its early stages to the end of the 1920s. It covers the time when it was forbidden to print in Brazil, and Portugal strictly controlled which books were sent to the colony, through the quick flourishing of a transnational printing industry and book market after 1822, to the shift of hegemony in the printing business from foreign to Brazilian hands at the beginning of the twentieth century. Sandra Guardini Vasconcelos is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Sao Paulo.

URSS, um novo mundo e O mundo do socialismo é um lançamento inédito de duas obras de Caio Prado Júnior há bastante tempo sem reedições. URSS, um novo mundo teve sua primeira publicação em 1934, e O mundo do socialismo, em 1962. Ambas são baseadas em viagens realizadas por Caio à URSS – e, no segundo caso, também à China. Em 1933, o jovem intelectual visitou a URSS por aproximadamente um mês e meio. A obra, que nasceu a partir de relatos dessa visita, aborda testemunhos e descrições sobre os aspectos sociais e econômicos daquele país, como o setor industrial, a agricultura, a coletivização, o comércio, a família, o papel da mulher, a religião, a educação, a cultura, as relações sociais, as instituições e outras características singulares daquela experiência histórica pouco conhecida dos leitores brasileiros à época. Já O mundo do socialismo nasceu da viagem de Prado Júnior entre julho e setembro de 1960 à China e novamente à URSS. Com 53 anos, Caio conservava sua visão entusiasta às experiências socialistas, posição que manteve até sua morte. Na URSS, o historiador visitou colcozes, creches, estádio de futebol e escolas. De lá, ele e a esposa seguiram para a China, onde conheceram Pequim, Wuhan, Xangai e outras cidades no sul. Sempre acompanhado de um guia local, visitaram fábricas, monumentos, comunas, teatro e um templo budista. Segundo Luiz Bernardo Pericás, coordenador da coleção Caio Prado Júnior, ambos os volumes representam uma fotografia do autor no início dos anos 1930 e começo da década de 1960: "Neles é possível encontrar suas ideias e seus posicionamentos em relação a vários assuntos, como o comunismo, o fascismo, o Estado, a revolução, a liberdade, o partido [...]. O livro Religião urbana: uma abordagem histórica demonstra como as mudanças importantes da religião podem ser mais bem compreendidas como resultado da dialética dos imaginários da cidade e da religião. Essa afirmação geral é argumentada de maneira exemplar para o mundo mediterrâneo antigo, desde o período helenístico até o final do Período Imperial romano, e, nesse sentido, para a cidade de Roma em particular. Muitas características da religião antiga seriam mais plausivelmente compreendidas como o resultado de efeitos e usos específicos do espaço e de suas bases sociais e cognitivas do que como características inerentes de uma "religião" específica. Tais características são o desenvolvimento de certos rituais de massa ligados a estruturas teatrais e circenses, a encenação generalizada de procissões teatrais, o papel declinante do sacrifício animal, a "intelectualização" da religião e o estabelecimento não só de redes especificamente religiosas e (inicialmente pequenas) religiões de grupo, mas também de formas de fixação de deuses a lugares específicos e a própria estrutura de um politeísmo informado por uma pluralidade de templos locais. É o reflexo dessa situação nos intelectuais e nas pessoas simples, e sua apropriação e reivindicação do espaço urbano que os tornaram sujeitos desses processos.
