Following the German occupation of France in 1940, French women moved deftly into the jobs and roles left by their male compatriots—even the role of soldier. In Lieutenant Sonia Vagliano: A Memoir of the World War II Refugee Crisis, Vagliano provides a gripping and compelling account of how her team of young French women was attached to a US First Army unit that arrived in Normandy two weeks after D-Day. From 1943 to 1945, Vagliano followed her unit from Normandy to Paris, through Belgium, and finally into Germany, where they cared for 41,000 total displaced persons and prisoners of war. This book examines the varied responses of six French authors to war, the French occupation and imprisonment. Jean Cassou was imprisoned as a member of a Resistance network and held incommunicado. During this time he composed sonnets in his head which he was able to publish later. Jean Cayrol's deportation to Mauthausen concentration camp as a result of his Resistance activities inspired his poems and novels. Madeleine Riffaud, aged only 18 in 1942, portrayed her Resistance experience, imprisonment and torture in her post-war prose and poems. A well-known literary critic and writer, Pierre-Henri Simon, composed poetry in his Stalag and wrote fiction after the war. Max Jacob, who died in Drancy, wrote poems and letters reflecting his personal views and feelings on the 'imprisonment' of the Occupation itself. Philippe Soupault was actively engaged in Resistance with the founding of Radio Tunis to combat the Italian Fascist station Radio Bari, broadcasting across the Mediterranean and North Africa. Imprisoned for these activities in 1942, he used poetry to keep a spirit of resistance alive. Each of these authors sought to maintain the spirit of the Resistance, bear witness to the times, and contribute to the future, using literature as their instrument.

Formal and informal institutions structure our social interactions by giving rise to normative expectations and patterns of collective behaviour. This collection grapples with how affect, imagination, and embodiment can operate to either constrain or enable the justice of institutions and the experiences of specific social identities. This anthology explores the myriad ways institutions work to systematically disadvantage people with particular identities whilst privileging others, and considers the legal, political, and normative interventions that might serve to promote a more just society. Taken together, the chapters represent the scope of existing research within institutional theory, affect theory, race theory, and theories of social imaginaries. Across a range of topics (human rights, racial and sexual violence, transitional justice and democratic movements) this collection critically assesses the extent to which theorists have attended to the conjoined influence of the imagination, embodiment, and affective phenomena on processes of institutional change that aim to achieve social justice. The present volume contains thirteen articles based on work presented at the “XX. Century Conference: If This Is A Woman” at Comenius University Bratislava in January 2019.
