Ausonia Favorido Donato

This book brings the suffering and sober account of the itinerary of a very particular category of Jews. Survivors of the Nazi extermination in Europe, they arrived in Israel, lived there – some, like Samuel Kilsztajn, the author of this book, were born in the Promised Land –, did not adapt and re-emigrated to Europe, as a platform to reach the American continent, the New World. In Returnees, Samuel Kilsztajn creates a dynamic of coming and going between the characters and the structures in the midst of which they move, and from there arises, helped by the clarity of the writing, a story that holds, moves and makes you think about the stones that people find along the way. In such an unusual and cruel way. And the words that describe this painful tour around the vast world are not measured by a supposed politeness: they are spoken with all the letters. Scream. After seven decades, the drama of refugees is becoming increasingly present on all continents. You have to clamour out for them. Cristina Konder and Mauro Malin

The essays that make up Yiddish bring together the homely flavor of family stories, the reminiscences of a childhood in a neighborhood where Yiddish was in the conversations of immigrants, old and recent, in business, in the newspapers, even in the chair of the Portuguese immigrant barber. The informality of the language, which for Shmulik was literally mameloshn (mother tongue), only became an object of his study much later, even though the memory and his search for the first childhood book and the short story Dos yingele mitn ringele (The little boy with the little ring), with which he shows an enormous identification, has accompanied his trajectory. Added to these affectionate stories was the verve of a researcher, bringing to his texts the varied readings of scholars who studied the history of Yiddish and the life of Ashkenazi Jews. With a voluminous press, its rich literature, theatrical and musical production, if the rise and fall of modern secular Yiddish literature lasted a hundred and fifty years, as Shmulik argues in his text, the historical universe and the political context of this production are much broader. And he makes a point of presenting us this intricate story, full of things that comes and goes on the borders and in the ruling empires. Much of the book is devoted to sharing some aspects of readings from some of the leading authors of the Yiddish language. Here, Shmulik offers us inspirations from his literary interpretations, an invitation to get even closer to these big names in literature. In this course, Sholem Aleichem and I. L. Peretz, classics, and Isaac Bashevis Singer, Nobel Prize in Literature, authors with guaranteed place, are present. Added to them are lesser known figures, despite their wide production, such as Dovid Bergelson, Chaim Grade and the huge Avrom Sutzkever; literary pearls like the works of Bella Chagall; and short stories by Chaim Rapoport, one of the many authors who wrote in Yiddish in Brazil. In this erratic journey of reflection on authors who wrote in different locations, Shmulik offers us an instigating synthesis of his own journey, part of which was collectively trodden in the monthly meetings of the Yiddishe Trupe. In sinuous paths, but paved with riches, at a time when awareness of the political value of the cultural heritage bequeathed by the Yiddish has expanded. This is the scene in which this book is inserted. It’s worth to get lost behind the little ring, through the little stones that Shmulik left in sight on the way. Lilian Starobinas

The stories of Jewish Holocaust survivors are all the same and at the same time all unique and thrilling. This is the story of two World War II Polish Jew survivors, Michal Kilsztajn from Bendin and Chana Libman from Mezritsh. Michal spent the War in Lager, Nazi German Forced Labor and Concentration Camps; and Chana was deported with her mother and siblings to Siberia. Among the statistics that hide personal tragedies, almost all the large families of Michal and Chana, which were living in Poland for centuries, were exterminated during World War II. Besides my parents’ memories I carry with me, I immersed in the vast literature of the Holocaust and had also the opportunity and joy, through my research, to find unknown but quite close relatives scattered to the four corners of the World. The active participation of many relatives, unknown until then, was yet decisive for the reconstruction of the family history’s puzzle. In this sense, these memories were collectively produced by several family members. One information here, another there, and, suddenly, everything started to come to life (and unfortunately suffering and death). These memories are a tribute to my parents and to the vanished Jewish World from Central and Eastern Europe. They collect documents, photographs and stories of private and family interest; and were written with continuous back and forth among the memories of the survivors and their direct descendants; and between these memories and the documents found in Civil Records, museums and other institutions for the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust.

Em 1972 eu estava trabalhando no Banco Francês e Brasileiro e recebia várias revistas francesas. Folheando uma delas, me deparei com a foto intitulada Partir c’est garder son équilibre. Emoldurei a foto e, desde então, ela me acompanha em minhas jornadas pelas estrelas.
