The Old Priest written by Anthony Wallace and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-12 with Fiction categories.

The Old Priest is a book of transformations. From the cigar-smoke-and-mirrors world of casino life, to the collection’s title character morphing into a goat-man before the narrator’s eyes, to a family drama upended by a miniature dinosaur in the backyard, Anthony Wallace writes about life-changing events. The characters seek to escape their earthly boundaries through artifice and fantasy, and those boundaries can be as elegant and fragile as a martini glass or as hardscrabble as an Indian reservation. In these eight vividly detailed short stories we encounter cheating husbands, neurotic housewives, out-of-control teenagers, desperate gamblers, deluded alcoholics, and a host of others who would like a chance at something more. Some face the consequences of their actions, while others simply begin to see what they’ve been missing all along. Through wry, ironic prose—and what feels like firsthand experience—Wallace describes a comic and often misguided search for self-knowledge in the most unlikely locations—like the Emerald City, a low-rent gambling den where a cocktail waitress dressed as an X-rated Dorothy offers gamblers more than a Scotch on the rocks; or the Bastille Hotel-Casino, where a dealer dressed as an eighteenth century footman deals five-dollar blackjack to a reminiscing Holocaust survivor. Occasionally a real demon appears, but the collection is mostly about personal demons and the possibility of exorcising them. The stories in The Old Priest have to do with time and memory, and they convincingly open out beyond ordinary daily time to reveal something else—the present moment, perhaps, but a larger, more mysterious conception of it.

In this important new book from a distinguished scholar, Josephine Donovan develops a new aesthetics of care, which she establishes as the basis for a critical approach to the representation of animals in literature. The Aesthetics of Care begins with a guide to the relationship between ethics and aesthetics, leading to a reconceptualization of key literary critical terms such as mimesis and catharsis, before moving on to an applied section, with interpretations of the specific treatment of animals handled by a wide range of authors, including Willa Cather, Leo Tolstoy, George Sand, and J.M. Coetzee. The book closes with three concluding theoretical chapters. Clear, original, and provocative, The Aesthetics of Care introduces and makes new contributions to a number of burgeoning areas of study and debate: aesthetics and ethics, critical theory, animal ethics, and ecofeminist criticism.

The First Pressing written by Donna Wahlert and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-20 with Poetry categories.

"In The First Pressing: Poetry of the Everyday, Donna Wahlert takes us on a journey through the four seasons of life, capturing tiny moments of everyday living. She carries us from the specific to the universal; with eloquence, clarity, and depth of spirit." -June Cotner, author of Graces, Wedding Blessings, and one dozen other inspirational anthologies. Whether Donna Wahlert writes about attending the spring birth of her granddaughter or finding a newly born fawn at her front door; or describes summer work in a bakery selling wedding cakes, or the mysteries of the Mississippi River; or hints at the autumn anxiety of a child going off to college or the contentment of rocking a grandchild against a harvest moon; or the grief of the wintry years of her mother's Alzheimer's disease, she leads us through complete seasons of emotion. She evokes the events of our own lives in such a way that we are touched to the very core. She writes about the moments of the everyday that we are experiencing but are unable to describe in her unique and touching way. She pilots us through awe and wistfulness, through fear and loss, and leads us back to hope, fulfillment and grace.
