Beaches of the Western Australian Coast covers the Western Australian coast between Eucla and Roebuck Bay, and includes Rottnest Island. It begins with three chapters that provide a background to the physical nature and evolution of the Western Australian coast and its 2,051 mainland beach systems. Chapter one covers the geological evolution of the coast and the role climate, wave, tides and wind in shaping the present coast and beaches. Chapter two presents in more detail the 16 types of beach systems that occur along the Western Australian coast, and chapter three discusses the types of beach hazards along the coast and the role of Surf Lifesaving Western Australia in mitigating these hazards. Chapter four presents a description of each of the 2,051 mainland beaches, as well as 63 beaches on Rottnest Island. The description of each beach includes its name, location, physical characteristics, access and facilities, with specific comments on its surf zone character and physical hazards, and its suitability for swimming, surfing and fishing. Based on the physical hazards, all beaches are rated in terms of public safety and scaled from 1 (least hazardous) to 10 (most hazardous).

This book offers a theoretical and practical exploration of the beach as space and places unique disciplinary lenses (Political Science and Geography). If we accept that what one possesses, one has a claim to, becoming property, then how that possession is enforced, socially, makes all the difference in defining what constitutes territoriality. Morgan and his colleagues have carried out various studies and applied various methods to study the developing coast of Florida. From these efforts, we compare the different regions of the State (e.g., Florida panhandle vs. South Florida) in terms of local beach culture and economics to unpack the topic of tension between beach property and access using firsthand accounts in many cases. This book approaches the complex topic of territoriality on Florida’s beaches from multiple perspectives but related methods involving time geography, a public space index, participatory mapping/cartography, and transboundary viewsheds. This analysis illustrates the fruitfulness of conceptualizations of property that are complex, multiplicative, and evolving. It calls for a recognition of human rights to the commons -- both now and in the future. Headland-bay beaches (HBBs) are ubiquitous in coastal environment. They exist around the world naturally or artificially as byproduct of engineering project. Though in various shapes, sizes and stability, a HBB in static equilibrium not only is a delight for visitors, but also offers hope for better beach protection, restoration, recreation, and shoreline management. With an empirical parabolic model now available, the stability of an existing HBB can be verified, the future bay shape downdrift of a harbor can be predefined, and a stable HBB can be designed.Although a plethora of books are available for coastal and ocean engineering and geomorphology, only a countable few have covered engineering applications of HBBs. On the contrary, this book with focus on the HBBs in static equilibrium aims to offer a comprehensive volume with knowledge and applications for coastal scientists, engineers, managers, students, and the general public interested in HBBs. Useful software tools for HBBs (MEPBAY, MeePaSoL, and SMC) are introduced in the book to aid in applications.The authors have set out to make this book the first unique publication on HBBs, by bringing together the old coastal geomorphic knowledge and new concepts for static bay beaches. This book also provides numerous examples using the static bay beach concept to assist coastal scientists and engineers on planning and pre-design of a stable HBB, and for experimentalists, consultants, and numerical modelers to alleviate the burden of comparing planning options and conducting laborious physical experiments on coastal sedimentation problems.
