What has media freedom entailed over the couple of centuries and successive governments of the geopolitical region that became South Africa since it was colonised by Westerners? And why can media freedom be described as both pillar and cornerstone of a democracy? It’s simple, as in the words of Nelson Mandela, first state president of a democratic South Africa: Press freedom is the “lifeblood of democracy”. This book tells the tale of the various states of press freedom, or unfreedom, from colonial times to today – from a British governor called a dictator and a despot, through apartheid’s “pigmentocracy”, or “sjambokracy”, where the rule of law “has been replaced by the rule of the whip”, up to the dawn of liberation, with media freedom entrenched in Article 16 of South Africa’s Bill of Rights. And why should all of this concern you? Because media freedom is not about the freedom of the media. It is about your freedom. As was formulated by an editor under apartheid: “If we don’t have a public sympathetic to a free press, not only will we not have a free press, we won’t have a democracy either.” Or, in the words of former Sowetan editor and SANEF chair, Mpumelelo Mhkabela: “Media freedom has nothing to do with the media, but with the freedom of citizens.” And that is why you should know that a free media is the only guarantee for your freedom. O presente livro traz como tema de estudos as greves do CPERS/Sindicato em tempo de neoliberalismo com o foco no desenvolvimento de uma pedagogia que emerge no processo da luta social. Essa pedagogia acontece a partir da necessidade organizativa dos/das docentes que estão inseridos na lógica de exploração do trabalho mediada pelo Estado na sociedade capitalista. Particularmente, essa categoria de trabalhadores/as está submetida a baixos salários, pagos de forma parcelada, a sobrecarga de trabalho e a precarização das relações de trabalho. Essa realidade tem levado os/as professores/as, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, a auto-organização política e a construção do movimento social. A pesquisa teve como objetivo compreender os significados pedagógicos da greve e das ações de protestos impulsionada pelo CPERS/Sindicato, em 2017, bem como os sentidos da sua participação para a educação política frente a política de desvalorização do trabalho docente. Para a realização da análise de informações foi utilizada a Teoria Social dos Movimentos Sociais, a partir do materialismo histórico e dialético. As ferramentas utilizadas na pesquisa foram: entrevistas semiestruturadas com dirigentes e militantes de base do CPERS/Sindicato, e análise de documentos. Na pedagogia da luta, os/as trabalhadores/as docentes entendem que não é possível comprometer-se com uma posição em assembleia e contrariá-la na escola (comprometimento com o coletivo); que, em tempos de neoliberalismo, o governo estadual segue à risca a esse receituário enfraquecendo o próprio poder do Estado, mas que esses são tempos de resistência, e a greve, nesse contexto, foi a arte de resistir a essa política (resistência coletiva). Procurou-se trazer o acompanhamento da negociação entre o sindicato e o governo, reconhecendo a consciência dos limites da ação, que fazem parte de uma educação política, que é desafiadora, pois exercida contra um poder instituído (educação política na ação). Na ação coletiva se estabelecem alguns sentidos da participação, pois no movimento sindical se conhece uma forma radicalizada de democracia; que, por fim, devido à luta coletiva desenvolve-se um sentimento de pertencimento a um grupo social, através da homogeneização do discurso, seja através dos problemas em comum enfrentados que reforçam seus laços de solidariedade e contribuem na construção de uma identidade coletiva.
