CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) is a major means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially from centralized energy conversion sites. Many studies have been conducted either on the CO2 capture side or on the sequestration side, but research on CO2 transport, which connects the capture side and the sequestration side, is rather limited. CO2 capture sites and sequestration sites are usually not geographically located in the same region, thus planning and design of CO2 transport infrastructure must be considered before capture and sequestration activities are conducted. Previously, some studies have been conducted to address the optimal planning problem of CO2 pipelines network via a source-sink match approach, which is applicable to early stages of CCS development when the total amount of CO needed to be transported is rather small. However, in scenarios with large amount of CO to be transported, the source-sink match approach appears to be less efficient. In this manuscript, we propose a superstructure based modelling and optimization framework for optimal planning of CO2 transport pipelines network, where all CO2 emissions sources and sequestrations sites can be connected by pipelines, and pump stations can also be built along pipelines to maintain the pressure of CO transported. We also provide a case study of a region in North China, with 45 emissions sources and four sequestration sites. Different configurations of pipelines network are illustrated in scenarios with low, medium, and high CO2 capture rates.

The field of systematic structure-based drug design is becoming more promising along with the continuous developments in molecular modeling software and computational hardware. Virtual screening can be performed on vast regions of chemical space while analyzing these structures with increased detail and accuracy. The concept of utilizing small molecules, in place of proteins, that exhibit biological activity towards a given protein target, whether activating or inhibiting, is known as non-peptide mimetics. These mimetics have several advantages over their peptide-based counterparts (decreased size, increased stability, increased lipophilicity etc.) while maintaining comparable or improved activities. Many of the properties used to characterize the oral bio-availability of drug candidates are also utilized in process design, which could allow for simultaneous optimization of several process and product variables on a property-based platform. This contribution outlines an algorithm for the design of mimetics based on information from existing pharmacophore models. Ideally, these techniques could be implemented alongside conventional high-throughput screening (HTS) efforts to alleviate the time and costs required to develop new therapeutic drugs with improved processing ability.

An extended systematic methodology for the design of emulsion-based chemical products is presented. The methodology consists of a model-based framework involving seven sequential hierarchical steps: starting with the identification of the needs to be satisfied by the product and then adding one-by-one the different classes of chemicals, until a formulation is obtained, the stability of which as en emulsion is finally checked with appropriate models. Structured databases, appropriate pure component as well as mixture property models, rule-based selection criteria and CAMD techniques are employed together to obtain one or more candidate formulations. A conceptual case-study representing a personal detergent is presented to highlight the methodology.

This paper introduces a mathematical programming approach to systematically find optimal designs of experiments for linear algebraic models. The method assumes that we have a fully specified parametric model with unknown parameters and the design criterion is convex. To address the problem we use a semi-definite programming formulation, originally developed by , and propose a new global optimization based framework to determine D-optimal designs. The approaches are applied to an empirical response surface model to design an experimental design, and the mixture components are the composition of the solvent.

Mathematical modelling and optimization of the natural gas based Distributed Energy Supply System (DESS), both at the building level and the overall energy supply network level was carried out for three types of micro-CHP – solid oxide fuel cells, Stirling engines, internal combustion engines – and for two operating strategies – cost-driven and primary energy-driven. The modelling framework has particularly allowed the quantification of the impact of micro-CHP on the total primary energy consumption at the whole network level. The result of a case study based on the UK reveals the range of the overall reduction in primary energy usage and central power plant capacity requirement and the range of the increase in natural gas supply to homes. The economic analysis shows that the coupling of different technologies, sizes of the CHP engine, and the operating strategies gives rise to a wide range of payback time.

Environmental process design methods often incorporate life-cycle assessment (LCA) as a deterministic black-box methodology. However, LCA suffers from several sources of ambiguity and uncertainty. These limitations are particularly severe for the multi-functional processes typical for the chemical industry. This work introduces a rigorous uncertainty assessment framework. The framework quantifies data uncertainties and also uncertainties that result from fixing multi-functionality in LCA by allocation. The method is derived from a matrix-framework for LCA and applied to a comparison of alternative chlorine electrolysis technologies.

High purity methane gas from bio-gas has been magnified as an alternative source of energy recently. Gas above 95% purity can be used as fuel for transportation, however only gas above 97% purity can be distributed via pipe lines for domestic usage. Price of 97% purity gas for domestic gas is much higher than 95% purity gas that is used only for transportation, however recovery of methane gas in the process is lower. Purity and recovery of the product is determined by operating procedures. Thus, several researchers are setting their goal to improve profit by controlling operating procedures. Among upgrading processes, the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is suitable for separation of high purity methane gas in terms of economics. In this study, as step-time in the PSA has huge effect in the entire process, the optimal step-time for maximizing profit is evaluated in the bio-gas upgrading process using PSA. Especially the relation between profit and steptime is taken into consideration. Before optimization, a 4-step PSA model has been built on physics and chemistry theoretical basis. The developed model is also simulated using dynamic simulation software. After that, optimal step-time for maximizing profit is calculated by optimization method.

Isolating faulty variables is a crucial step during the determination of the root causes of a process fault. Contribution plots, with their corresponding control limits, are the most popular tools used for isolating faulty variables. However, the isolation results may be misled by the smearing effect. In addition, the control limits of the contributions cannot be used to isolate faulty variables, since the control limits are obtained from the normal operating data, which lack any information about the faults. In chemical processes, process faults rarely show a random behavior; on the contrary, they will be propagated to varying variables due to the actions of the process controllers. During the evolution of a fault, the task of isolating faulty variables needs to be concerned with the faulty variables decided in the previous data; in addition, the current decisions should influence the isolation results for the next sample when the fault is constantly occurring. In the presented work, an unsupervised data-driven fault isolation method was developed based on Bayesian decision theory. The Tennessee Eastman (TE) process was used as a benchmark example to demonstrate how the different faulty variables were isolated when the fault was evolving.

Uncontrolled changes caused many accidents or disasters. Management of change (MOC) has been a very important issue in process safety management. In this paper, it is considered that MOC is divided to two parts: one is individual change management and the other is management of them. Individual change management is an instance of engineering over the plant lifecycle (Plant-LCE), however a business flow of MOC has been hardly discussed. A business flow of MOC is expected to be based on a business process model (BPM) of Plant-LCE. The logical process safety management based on a BPM of Plant-LCE has been proposed. However the BPM is dispersed and too detailed for precisely. Therefore, an overview for the BPM of Plant-LCE has been proposed. Using an individual change management example, this paper shows that a business flow of the MOC can be described in the overview of the BPM of Plant-LCE.
