This study seeks to pave the way of designing and implementing a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) for controllability analysis of a chemical process design. Chemical processes are nonlinear continuous/discrete dynamic systems that are subject to considerable uncertainties and variations during their design and operation. These systems are designed to operate at an economically optimal steady-state. However, changing the value of the process parameters may cause deviations and elicit dynamic responses from processes. Generally, the ability of holding a process within a specified operating regime is called controllability. In this study a Petri net based DSL is designed specifically for controllability evaluation of process designs with an application to a flowsheet case study.

This paper discusses data-based operating windows as a tool for process management and development. In particular identification of the operating window and its uncertainty are analyzed. The operating window is determined by maximizing either the mutual information (static) or entropy transfer (dynamic). An industrial example shows that the entropy of the indicator variable is reduced to half by an operating window specified with only few variables, selected amongst over 3000 candidates. Test model based simulations suggest that such few-variable operating windows can be reliably identified from datasets having lengths of a few thousand observations.

This work investigates in detail several methodologies to improve the optimal control of discontinuous processes. It shows that whenever a batch dynamic optimization is solved, the optimum is related to the control methodology adopted and the result is a sub-optimum since other more (or apparently less!) appealing control methodologies might lead to “better” optimal solutions. The selection of the best control methodology for the dynamic optimization is broached for batch reactors using gPROMS models builder 3.5.2 for dynamic modeling and BzzMath 6.0 optimizers to handle control and optimization issues.

Product transfer is a problem commonly encountered in industry when a production has to be transferred from a source plant to a target plant. In this paper a strategy to assist product transfer is proposed. The strategy is based on latent variable models (LVMs) to relate the data available from one or more source plants with the (usually scarce) data available from the target plant, and on LVM inversion to estimate the target plant operating conditions. The inversion is performed within an optimization framework, which can handle constraints for both product quality variables and input variables. An experimental nanoparticle production process is used as a test bed to illustrate the benefits of the proposed strategy.

Uncontrolled changes caused many accidents or disasters. Management of change (MOC) has been a very important issue in process safety management. In this paper, it is considered that MOC is divided to two parts: one is individual change management and the other is management of them. Individual change management is an instance of engineering over the plant lifecycle (Plant-LCE), however a business flow of MOC has been hardly discussed. A business flow of MOC is expected to be based on a business process model (BPM) of Plant-LCE. The logical process safety management based on a BPM of Plant-LCE has been proposed. However the BPM is dispersed and too detailed for precisely. Therefore, an overview for the BPM of Plant-LCE has been proposed. Using an individual change management example, this paper shows that a business flow of the MOC can be described in the overview of the BPM of Plant-LCE.

We demonstrate an approach to construct an adaptive design space in the face of process variability, for an industrial hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) with resin lot-to-lot variability. The step has a complex mixture of impurities in the feed stream and a multi component product. The step must deliver a specific distribution of product forms in the elution peak whilst maintaining product recovery and impurity removal. In our approach, a mechanistic model is used which gives a good representation of the system, and has been validated experimentally. The model is used to quickly and efficiently explore the impact of process parameters on process performance, utilizing stochastic simulation to generate probabilistic design spaces for different resin lots. The results indicate that significant increases in process robustness can be made by adapting the design space based on the resin lot in use, rather than fixing the design space for all resin lots. An adaptive design space enables operation further away from high risk regions, increases the size of operating regions and improves flexibility to variations in process inputs.

Reliable models for rate-based phenomena are the backbone of model-based process design. These models are often unknown in the early design phase and need to be determined from laboratory experiments. Although model-based experimental analysis and process design are often executed sequentially, the kinetic models might not be suitable to reliably design a process. In this paper, we address this problem and present a first step on the integration of model identification and process optimization. Rather than decoupling model identification and process optimization, we use information from process optimization to design optimal experiments for improving the quality of the kinetic model given the intended use of the model. Sensitivities, which describe the influence of parametric uncertainties on the economic objective used in process optimization, are used as weights for optimal experimental design. This way, the confidence in the parameter values is maximized to reduce their influence on the process optimization objective. This first step on the integration of model identification and process optimization improves the predictive quality of a reaction kinetic model for process design without any further experimental effort.

This proceedings book contains the papers presented at the joint conference event of the 9th Symposium on Process Systems Engineering (PSE'2006) and the 16th European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE-16), held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, from July 9 - July 13, 2006. The symposium follows the first joint event PSE'97 / ESCAPE-7 in Trondheim, Norway (1997). The last two venues of the ESCAPE symposia were Barcelona, Spain (2005) and Lisbon, Portugal (2004) and the most recent PSE symposia were held in Kunming, China (2003) and Keystone, Colorado, USA (2000). The purpose of both series is to bring together the international community of researchers engineers who are interested in computing-based methods in process engineering. The main objective of the symposium is to review and present the latest developments and current state in Process Systems Engineering and Computer Aided Process Engineering. The focus of PSE'2006 / ESCAPE-16 has been on Modelling and Numerical Methods, Product and Process Design, Operations and Control, Biological Systems, Infrastructure Systems, and Business decision support. * reviews and presents the latest developments and current state of Process Systems Engineering and Computer Aided Process Engineering * contains papers presented at a joint conference event * bringing together an international community of researchers and engineers interested in computing-based methods in Process Engineering
