Professorer, studenter og polit.er. Om velfærdsstatens universitetspolitik 1950-1975 undersøger magtkampene om de danske universiteter i perioden fra 1950'ernes begyndelse til midt i 1970'erne. Det var kampe, som udspillede sig mellem den fremvoksende velfærdsstats idealer om lighed og demokrati og universiteternes bærende ideer om akademisk frihed. Professorerne repræsenterede universiteterne i de udvalg under Undervisningsministeriet, hvor linjerne for den fremtidige universitetspolitik blev diskuteret. De varetog de lærdomsmæssige interesser. Studenterne deltog efterhånden også i udvalgsarbejdet og havde fra 1965 større formel indflydelse i Undervisningsministeriets udvalg end i universiteternes interne styrelsesorganer. Polit.erne havde vundet frem i centraladministrationen, og de kom til også at præge universitetspolitikken. De insisterede på først og fremmest at se på, hvordan universiteterne kunne styrke de generelle udviklingstræk i den fremvoksende velfærdsstat. Polit.ernes påvirkning af universitetspolitikken skete diskret, men fik alligevel store konsekvenser. Bogen giver et grundigt indblik i, hvordan overordnede strømninger i velfærdsstaten blev bestemmende for udformningen af universitetspolitikken på bekostning af krav og ønsker fra universiteterne selv, der måtte se studentertallet vokse eksplosivt fra 6.600 i 1953 til 35.000 i 1970. Analysen af de universitetspolitiske diskussioner sker på basis af arkivstudier af materiale, som ikke tidligere har været brugt i videnskabeligt arbejde. Kildebaseret forskning om de danske universiteters historie bringer os tæt på forskelle og alliancer i de universitetspolitiske diskussioner. Udgivet i samarbejde med Rigsarkivet.

This publication contains the proceedings of an international conference on academic freedom and university autonomy attended by 180 scholars and representatives from 30 countries. The conference's official statement, the Sinaia Statement, follows an introduction. The Statement calls for a new understanding between universities and society and a reaffirmation and revitalization of the principles of academic freedom and university autonomy in light of the current profound social changes and demands placed on institutions of higher education. Covered in the account of the proceedings are the opening of the conference, development of its working document, description of key-note speeches, summaries of working group debates with their preliminaries and conclusions, description of the closing session and of the adoption of the Statement. As the scientific study of human development matures it is not only natural, but it is necessary to reach beyond understanding the ways humans develop capacities, to study the ways emerging capacities fit into the larger sphere of human undertakings. Music is one of the most significant of those endeavors. As I attend the several piano competitions that are on my agenda each year, and see children seated at the keyboard drawing forth the magnificent sounds of Bach, Chopin, and Ravel, I am always a little awed. Surely, it seems to me, the piano* is among the best of man's creations; the creative energies of great composers are among mankind's greatest expressions; and encouraging children to associate themselves seriously with both instrument and composer can be one of the great blessings to their young lives and, by association, to the larger society. Music touches the entire range of our lifespan on a daily basis. Involving chil dren with music and music training has high market, and common sense, validity. Parents understand intuitively that children will benefit, and their lives will be enriched, if they are influenced by music and music training.

The university in Europe – as a central institution of society – is presently met with many new expectations challenging established practices and self-understandings of academics across Europe. In the European Union, the higher education and research system has become a foremost tool of change. Current reforms across national higher education systems are seen as a potential for creating a European Higher Education Area, as well as an opportunity to introduce EU policies and ideas addressing how reforms can contribute to promote this as an EU dimension. An argument that only reforms of the higher education institution – in particular the research university, as a European institution – can make Europe regain its competitive force and economic growth-potential has gained currency in the last decade with reference to the US. The university system of the US, particularly its highly regarded elite universities, is also held forth as a model for the developments in the EU, and thus for the reforms of the different countries of EU. In this book, however, it is demonstrated that much of the political rhetoric about the construction of the future knowledge economy of Europe and the promotion of a European Higher Education Area may contradict basic values that give Europe its identity as a cultural region. Promoting the US university as an ideal model does not do justice to the kind of problems the US is facing in their own reform efforts, nor does it reflect properly the social costs of copying such an elite system. The book raises a number of issues relating to elitism and democracy, internationalisation and regionalisation, and new forms of governance in higher education and research which current EU policies seem to neglect.
