I sommeren 1958 blev den første højenergetiske uran kernereaktor, DR2, gjort kritisk på halvøen Risø i Roskilde Fjord. Det var her jeg, Poul Erik Lindelof (dengang stud-polyt. P.E. Gregers Hansen), fik min første stilling som medhjælp i fysik. Karl Ove Nielsen var leder af DR2 og startede min interesse for naturvidenskab. I de følgende somre var jeg ansat som student på Reaktorafdelingen, Kemiafdelingen og Elektronikafdelingen på Risø. Som student var blev jeg senere ansat ved firmaet Brüel og Kjær og ved Niels Bohr Instituttet på Blegdamsvej 17. Inspireret af disse ansættelser valgte jeg retningen elektrofysik på DTU og skrev licentiatafhandling i faststoffysik med H. Højgaard Jensen (KU) som vejleder. Med alt dette i baggagen valgte jeg en videnskabelig løbebane, der startede i Finland og førte til 40 års anættelse på Københavns Universitet (H.C. Ørsted Instituttet og Niels Bohr Institutet). Denne bog handler om mine videnskabelige projekter, ansøgninger, nederlag og resultater i disse 50 år.
