This book is a daily recovery guide depicting the authors first year in recovery from a drug and alcohol addiction. It shows the power of God, and how He was able to turn a "junkie", (junkie, meaning drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, over-eating, video games, internet, power, control, etc.) into a productive member of society. The recovery guide can be used for individuals recovering or trying to recover from any number of addictions. It lets the recovering person and the family know what it takes to stay clean and live a productive life. The book is also a great guide for families who do not understand the horrors of addiction whatever they may be. It helps the family show empathy instead of sympathy for their loved one. Each day has a title, a description of that day and a quote at the end to reflect a positive reinforcement regarding the recovery process.

As levels of urbanization increase around the world, the growing concentrations of population and economic activity increases vulnerability to natural disasters. Interdependencies among urban populations mean that damage to the built environment, including water, sewer and energy infrastructure, can affect millions. Even if there is no change in the rate of occurrence of natural disasters (an unlikely prospect in the face of ongoing climate change) the potential for human and economic loss will continue to increase, along with the time required to recover. How do cities prepare for and recover from natural disasters? In this book, the authors provide a broad overview of the issues related to the impacts of disasters on cities around the world, from assessing risks to accounting for damages. The comparative approach across different types of disasters in a range of urban locations is useful in identifying opportunities for policy transfer. While there is no ’one size fits all’ solution to hazard mitigation, valuable lessons can be learned from the experiences of others. The chapters emphasize different modes for assessing hazard risk, as well as strategies for increasing the resiliency of vulnerable populations.

The seeds of alcoholism are often planted deep in the shadows of childhood, growing silently and unnoticed until it inevitably blooms into an active problem that can derail and destroy lives, careers, and families. Surviving Magnelia Monsoon: Beyond 1215 and the Bottle is a raw, intimate, and inspiring memoir, vividly detailing the author’s descent into alcoholism, and how (after decades of struggle), she finally managed to reclaim joy, love, and family from the depths of a despair she’d been sure would never end. From a childhood that grew more and more dysfunctional as her parents’ marriage dissolved into tears, raised voices, and raised fists, eventually ending in divorce and estrangement, the narrative follows the author’s struggles to feel safe or loved after her mother’s departure, to calm the chaotic storm left in her wake, and to fill the growing emptiness, threatening to swallow her whole, with anything that might take the pain away, or at least numb her to it for a while. She manages to keep a mask of normalcy firmly in place for years (more or less), and build a near-perfect life with a loving family of her own, but with alcohol degrading its foundations, a collapse is inevitable—a collapse that will leave her with no choice but to get help or die buried under the rubble. Contradicting the egregious and harmful stereotype of alcoholics being weak-willed or “lesser than,” this memoir showcases the incredible strength needed to even function under the weight of denial, rationalizations, and self-loathing, let alone accomplish anything, as well as the fact that it is a disease that doesn’t discriminate based on birth or circumstance. It can affect anyone ... and does. No alcoholic is truly alone in their struggle. It is all too common. But there is always a way out.

2020 will forever be remembered as the year the Coronavirus pandemic changed life as we know it across the World. Economies crashed, livelihoods were eradicated, and thousands of lives were shortened or devastated by the effects of this novel virus. In the UK, the National Health Service was thrust into the limelight as the country watched our healthcare system respond to the consequences of this disease. This book traces a timeline of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting key events in how the UK and the NHS approached these unparalleled events. Comparisons are made with tactics used around the globe and the decisions of our leaders questioned. Alongside the facts, are stories. Every one of us has a ‘Covid story’ to tell, and this book is a collection of some of these stories from our frontline staff. As the country went into rapid lockdown in March, the staff of the NHS donned their PPE and continued to go to work. They tell us what peak pandemic was like in the emergency departments, wards, ICUs, GP practices, care homes and the ambulances of the UK. We hear from a nurse who became a covid patient in her own ICU; staff from the rapidly constructed Nightingale hospital; a GP who returned from retirement to assist with the response; as well as stories from international healthcare professionals such a as a cruise ship nurse in the Caribbean, a public health consultant in Australia and ED doctors in South Africa.
