Inductive Measurement Of Plasma Jet Electrical Conductivity written by M. W. Turner and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Electric arc categories.

Measurement of plasma jet electrical conductivity has utility in the development of explosively driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy converters as well as magnetic flux compression reaction chambers for nuclear/chemical pulse propulsion and power. Within these types of reactors, the physical parameter of critical importance to underlying MHD processes is the magnetic Reynolds number, the value of which depends upon the product of plasma electrical conductivity and velocity. Therefore, a thorough understanding of MHD phenomena at high magnetic Reynolds number is essential, and methods are needed for the accurate and reliable measurement of electrical conductivity in high-speed plasma jets. It is well known that direct measurements using electrodes suffer from large surface resistances, and an electrodeless technique is desired.

This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.

A full envelope database of a thrust-vectoring axisymmetric nozzle perfomance for the Pratt & Whitney Pitch/Yaw Balance Beam Nozzle (P/YBBN) is being developed using the F-15 Advanced Control Technology for Integrated Vehicles (ACTIVE) aircraft. At this time, flight research has been completed for steady-state pitch vector angles up to 20 deg. at an altitude of 30,000 ft from low power settings to maximum afterburner power. The nozzle performance database includes vector forces, internal nozzle pressures, and temperatures all of which can be used for regression analysis modeling. The database was used to substantiate a set of nozzle performance data from wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamic analyses. Findings from initial flight research at Mach 0.9 and 1.2 are presented in this paper. The results show that vector efficiency is strongly influenced by power setting. A significant discrepancy in nozzle performance has been discovered between predicted and measured results during vectoring.

Wave Turbine Analysis Tool Development written by Gerard E. Welch and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with categories.

A quasi-one-dimensional (Q-1-D) computational fluid dynamic solver, previously developed and validated for pressure-exchanger wave rotors, is extended in the present work to include the blade forces of power producing wave rotors (i.e., wave turbines). The accuracy of the single-passage Q-1-D solver is assessed relative to two two-dimensional solvers: a single-passage code and a multi-block stator/rotor/stator code. Comparisons of computed results for inviscid, steady and unsteady flows in passage geometries typical of wave rotors reveal that the blade force model is accurate and that the correlation (effective stress and heat flux) terms of the Q-1-D passage-averaged formulation can be neglected. The ends of the rotor passages pose particular challenges to Q-1-D formulations because the flow there must at times deviate significantly from the mean camber line angle to match the port flow fields. This problem is most acute during the opening and closing of the rotor passages. An example sub-model is developed to account for the deviation between the flow departure angle and the mean camber line exit angle that occurs as an inviscid flow decelerates to meet a uniform pressure boundary. Comparisons of results from four-port wave turbine simulations reveal that the Q-1-D solver currently overpredicts wave turbine performance levels and highlight the need to devote future effort to the boundary conditions and sub-models of the Q-1-D solver.
