Long esteemed as counterpoint's greatest master, Johann Sebastian Bach created harmonizations of chorales that have served as voice-leading models for generations. This affordable volume features 371 of the composer's harmonized chorales, presented in closed score for easy study as well as play. These traditional liturgical melodies in four-voice arrangements comprise Gregorian chant melodies that survived the Reformation to form part of Protestant worship as well as traditional German melodies that found their way into services. A staple of every music program, Bach’s chorales spell out the rules of music theory that remain the cornerstones of modern composition. These closed score arrangements, ideal for playing at the piano, offer keyboardists an opportunity to practice their sight-reading skills. Students of counterpoint and harmony will find this collection of enormous theoretical importance, and all will appreciate the practical value of its modest price.

Allusion As Narrative Premise In Brahms S Instrumental Music written by Jacquelyn E. C. Sholes and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-24 with Music categories.

Who inspired Johannes Brahms in his art of writing music? In this book, Jacquelyn E. C. Sholes provides a fresh look at the ways in which Brahms employed musical references to works of earlier composers in his own instrumental music. By analyzing newly identified allusions alongside previously known musical references in works such as the B-Major Piano Trio, the D-Major Serenade, the First Piano Concerto, and the Fourth Symphony, among others, Sholes demonstrates how a historical reference in one movement of a work seems to resonate meaningfully, musically, and dramatically with material in other movements in ways not previously recognized. She highlights Brahms's ability to weave such references into broad, movement-spanning narratives, arguing that these narratives served as expressive outlets for his complicated, sometimes conflicted, attitudes toward the material to which he alludes. Ultimately, Brahms's music reveals both the inspiration and the burden that established masters such as Domenico Scarlatti, J. S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, and especially Beethoven represented for him as he struggled to emerge with his own artistic voice and to define and secure his unique position in music history.

The Reception Of Bach S Organ Works From Mendelssohn To Brahms written by Russell Stinson and has been published by Oxford University Press on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-06 with Music categories.

"The Reception of Bach's Organ Works from Mendelssohn to Brahms represents a significant contribution to the literature on the so-called Bach revival. Stinson considers biographical research as well as musical evidence to arrive at a host of new and often startling conclusions about precisely which pieces served as compositional exemplars and which ones were especially valued as study and performance repertoire. Replete with intriguing anecdotes, his study includes detailed observations on how these composers annotated their personal copies of Bach's organ works." "Featuring a wealth of material previously unavailable in English, Stinson's up-to-date examination fills a gap in our understanding of how Bach's works were rediscovered by the musical public in the nineteenth century. Meticulously annotated and indexed, the book features numerous musical examples and facsimile plates as well as an exhaustive bibliography. Included in an appendix is Brahms's hitherto unpublished study score of the Fantasy in G Major, BWV 572. This book should be read by anyone interested in the organ, the music of Bach, or the musical culture of the nineteenth century."--BOOK JACKET.
