During the immediate period before World War Two, the RAF modified its command structure to rationalize for rapid expansion. Bomber Command was divided into six operational groups, each flying the same type of aircraft.3 Group had almost completely re-equipped with the Wellington by 4 September 1939 to carry out the second bombing operation of the war which was against German warships off Brunsbttel. In 1940 the first of the new four-engined bombers, the Short Stirling, came into service with the Group, being followed in 1942 by the Avro Lancaster. On 3rd/4th November 1943, No. 3 Group played a leading part in the first bombing attack in which heavy bombers made use of the radar bombing aid known as G-H. The target was Dsseldorf; bombs were dropped "blind" and good results were obtained. In July and August 1944, aircraft of this Group equipped with G-H maintained an all-weather attack against flying-bomb sites. Through the D-Day build-up, the liberation of France and conquest of Germany, formations of No. 3 Group attacked railway junctions, marshalling yards, troop concentrations, etc.During the week ending 25th March 1945, Bomber Command made numerous attacks to prepare for the crossing of the Rhine.

196 Squadron was formed in late 1942 as a night bomber squadron, in No. 4 Group Bomber Command. It was February 1943 before the squadron became operational with the first sorties being bombing raids on U Boat pens at Lorient, France flying Vickers Wellington aircraft. As well as the bombing raids the squadron also was used for 'gardening' (minelaying) sorties. The unit was then transferred to No.3 Group and re-equipped with Mk III Short Stirlings. Soon afterwards, the Stirling was removed from front-line bombing operations, in favour of the Lancaster and Halifax. Later in 1943 the squadron transferred once more, this time to 38 Group, Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF). Its new role included glider-towing, troop carrying and secret operations for the S.O.E. and S.A.S. The squadron took part in all the main invasion operations on and after D-Day, including the ill-fated Arnhem operation and then the successful Rhine Crossings. Its operational effectiveness was at the cost of numerous aircraft and crews. When the war in Europe ended the squadron was used to repatriate troops and help misplaced refugees. Steve Holmes' book replicates the squadron's operational record, telling its story as it unfolded day by day. It is Steve's second book. His first, Sherlock's Squadron, is a biographical novel of his father and his father's crew in 196 Squadron during World War II. This prompted Steve to research and write this book on the squadron's history. Steve has been the squadron's historian for the past 25 years. He is retired and lives in the south of Spain. He spends his time researching and writing and helping his good friend with his charity business.

205 Group RAF provided the only mobile force of heavy night bombers in the Mediterranean theater in the Second World War. It operated mainly from bases in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Italy, with occasional excursions to Malta, Greece and Iraq, attacking tactical and strategic targets according to the demands of the wider war in the theater. The force was relatively small when compared with the numbers of aircraft available to Bomber Command in the Western European theater, and it carried on using the venerable Vickers Wellington long after this aircraft had been relegated to the training role in the United Kingdom.Like their UK-based counterparts the night bombers were intended to operate in a strategic role, bombing targets away from the immediate battlefront. However, the demands of the war in the Middle East and Mediterranean soon diverted the bombers from their strategic role and saw them operating much closer to the front line in support of the hard pressed ground forces.The bomber squadrons in North Africa usually operated from Advanced Landing Grounds scraped out of the bare desert, with only a few tents for shelter. In Italy they did have more or less permanent bases, but they still lived in tents (if they were lucky) often surrounded by a sea of mud. There were no pubs, often no beer, and the only contact with their families were the eagerly awaited letters from home. Also the squadrons in England did not have Rommel continually knocking on their door. Thus, the operations of the night bombers in the Middle East and Mediterranean were often governed by the general progress of the war in the theater. The ebb and flow of the land battles not only determined the activities of the night bombers, but also determined their location. This book tells their story.

102 (Ceylon) Squadron was a mainstay of 4 Group from the outbreak of war to the end of hostilities, operating for the first time on the day after war was declared. 4 Group was equipped with the twin-engine Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, a slow but immensely reliable aircraft capable of remaining aloft for more than twelve hours. The Whitley was employed initially in a pioneering role to deliver propaganda leaflets to populations as far away as Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. Such sorties exposed the crews to extremes of cold in unheated aircraft but taught them also how to navigate over a blacked-out Europe at night at a time when the rest of Bomber Command was trained only for daylight operations. The squadron was attached to 18 Group of Coastal Command for a short period during the autumn of 1940 and undertook convoy protection duties. It was during this period that P/O Leonard Cheshire joined the squadron to begin an illustrious operational career that would see him progress through the ranks to command 76 Squadron and, later, the famous 617 Squadron (Dambusters), and to earn the award of a Victoria Cross. A contemporary of Cheshire was P/O Henry "Dinghy" Young, who would be selected as a flight commander under W/C Guy Gibson for Operation Chastise, the epic attack on the Ruhr Dams, from which he would fail to return. At the end of 1941 the squadron converted to the four-engine Handley Page Halifax, an aircraft with a troubled gestation period, which saw it withdrawn from operations for modifications on a number of occasions. The type was not suited to retrospective modifications, and this meant that 4 Group squadrons were constantly exchanging one variant for another. The Mk II/V Halifax underwent many design changes in an attempt to improve its performance and shed its questionable reputation. However it saw 102 Squadron through the campaigns of 1943 against the Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin, the last-mentioned extending through the winter of 1943/44. Late in 1943, 4 Group began to re-equip with the much-improved Hercules-powered Mk III Halifax. It would be some time before the type reached 102 (Ceylon) Squadron. At the time, the squadron was among those operating the Merlin-powered variants which, following the disaster of Leipzig in February 1944, was withdrawn from operations over Germany. Finally, in May 1944, the squadron returned to the forefront of operations with Mk IIIs and later Mk IVs. In the autumn of 1944, the squadron was among a number from 42 Base employed to ferry petrol to Europe to fuel the advance into Germany. During the course of its wartime career, the squadron suffered the third highest operational losses in Bomber Command, the highest losses in 4 Group and the highest Whitley losses. At the war's end 102 (Ceylon) Squadron was transferred to the newly formed Transport Command.

No.196 Squadron was reformed at RAF Driffield, Yorkshire, on November 7th 1942, as a night bomber unit in No. 4 Group, RAF Bomber Command. The squadron was initially equipped with the sturdy and reliable Vickers Wellington Mk.X. From the outset, the squadron was heavily committed to attacks on the German U-Boat pens on the French coast. Operating almost continuously during the Battle of the Ruhr, the squadron suffered grievous losses in men and aircraft. In July 1943, the Squadron transferred to No.3 Group and started conversion to the Short Stirling Mk.III, operating from the newly opened RAF Witchford, and soon became heavily engaged in Bomber Commands' autumn and early winter campaigns. With increased activity over German targets and revitalised German defences, the losses suffered by 196 Squadron, along with the Group's other Short Stirling equipped squadrons, steadily reached unacceptable levels. In November 1943, despite having proved itself repeatedly, No.196 was unceremoniously transferred to No.38 Group, much against the aircrew's wishes. This book recalls the achievements of a squadron that quietly fought a life-and-death battle over occupied Europe and Germany, almost unknown outside the parent group.
